Honestly shocked I finished this book. It’s rare for me to care so little about characters and feel world building is so sparse

Fantastic!

After I settled into the groove of this book, I really enjoyed it. The opening is a touch disorientating.

The underlying theme of choices and consequences kept me intrigued. Tenley struggles a lot through this book, not just with choosing a realm, but with finding her own path that isn't determined by her parents.

It does seem to drag at the end when it appears Tenley has made her choice but she remains silent. I might've missed something, but I didn't understand her need to remain unsigned.

I look forward to reading the next books and learning more about the realms
medium-paced

So this is like, my third time reading this book but my first time reviewing it so here's what you have to know.

Ten loves poems, likes to see both sides of the story, badass crazy chick locked in a detention center for not picking her parent's desired afterlife.

You heard that right ladies and gents, you get to CHOSE your AFTERLIFE. While the options are a tad limited, they are complete opposites making it an easy choice yes? no.

Do you want to bathe in the light of Troika, where everyone is equal and everyone is family?
Or would you rather Myriad, where you can always get ahead and submit to your every carnal desire?
Or would you never chose? YUP THAT'S AN OPTION. but not one you waaaaaannnt. Ending up in the realm of Many Ends is hell. Not literal hell, but it gets close. Just remember the songs your looney aunt taught you and you might get through.

Okay, in hindsight, the romance between Ten and Killian doesn't make a WHOLE lot of sense? But just roll with it, it's kinda cute.

With the ending leaving you in a bind, you'll immediately want to devour the rest of the series.

This is a 2.5. The storyline is FirstLife's redemption. The characterizations of the typical badass teenagers who have to prove themselves and do what they want because no one can tame them... until love and wisdom make the world clear... are obnoxious. Will I read the next book? Probably. But I won't be waiting impatiently for the pre-order of it.

This book felt like it was written by an author who woke up from a dream but could only remember 30% of the dream plot each time and scribbled it down before she forgot the details.

Spoilers:

The second half of the book flies through various locations with no descriptions such as the tunnels under her aunt's safe house, through the Many Ends twice, through a section of Myriad so quickly I felt like I had whiplash.

I couldn't follow how sometimes the souls in the Shells stayed alive but sometimes the souls died and it seemed entirely arbitrary either way. And I don't understand how Tenly can die and be resurrected 4 times, like nobody is that special. Also does she like Archer like a boyfriend or a friend or a brother, I got all three vibes at different points and couldn't understand what his role was to move the plot forward.

The romance between Killian and Tenly also made no sense, and there was very little character development to showcase their attraction to one another. Killian's supposed to be a wham bam thank you ma'am kind of guy, but he almost instantly falls for Tenley for no clear reason.

I really wanted to like this book, but it was fairly unlovable because it was so confusing.
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

This was fine, a bit jumpy in places. Lots of unanswered questions at the end.

Summary: Locked in an asylum for her refusal to let her parents dictate her afterlife choices, Ten Lockwood finds herself caught in a violent power struggle between the two leading Everlife realms that would do anything to claim her powerful soul.

life's too short to finish a bad book. so i stopped reading this one about two thirds of the way through. i guess i'm just not a fan of this author. this is the second book i've tried of hers and the second i've abandoned. i hate not finishing books, but i just couldn't force myself to keep going on this one.

I am a huge fan of Gena Showalter White Rabbit Chronicles, and I really had high hopes for this book. I did like it in a way, but I was also disappointed. This was a different take on good vs. evil. It was action packed but a bit gory. Showalter's writing was great, as usual. The concept of the book is a very unique perspective on life after death. Tenley Lockwood had to pick between the light and dark side, and didn't like being forced to decide. The only thing I really had a problem with was Ten's stubbornness to pick, even though deep down I think she always knew the right choice. It was a bit drawn out, and pretty violent, but overall it was a good read.
