2 stars -- so i respect how cool choi's authorial voice is, and how this book successfully tackles topics like poverty and racism.

however, i found the treatment of
Spoilerpenny's sexual assault
to be.... kind of shitty. i felt like it wasn't treated with the same time and attention that other heavy topics, like sam's money problems, sam's abusive mother, and penny's relationship with her mother, were treated with. i also have a major pet peeve about a character revealing that about themselves for a ~~PLOT TWIST~~. and overall it was written in a very cliché way.
Spoilerpenny literally asks sam, "do you think i'm broken?" like fuck off honestly.

i felt very little connection to the characters -- the narration is awkward at times and keeps you at arm's length, and not in a good way. also, this took me f o r e v e r to read: 5 days, while not reading anything else, which is a long time for me personally to finish something. i think it was because after that crappy scene, i dreaded picking it back up and didn't want to finish. maybe with the right reader, this would be a hit, but for me, emergency contact left a bad taste in my mouth.

I’ve been in a book slump for the last month. My sister told me to read something light, fun and romantic to break me out of it. She was kind of right (though credit to the slumps end is shared).
YA isn’t my genre of choice, not usually. This book had a lot of great things going for it. The characters are awkward and uncomfortable and weird, and I love them for it. I feel like there were gaps in relationship progressions, but maybe I missed them. The writing style wasn’t always my cup of tea. Some characters felt flat until the last minute. I wish some plot points had been emphasized more than others. But overall, I enjoyed it. The next time I’m feeling down or in a slump, I might give it a quick re-read.

ahh omg such a fun and easy read, felt like i was flying through the pages
i liked the ending, would have liked one more sam chapter or a bit of their first date
glad that penny and her mom were able to talk and sam got a bit of closure with his mom

I was going to give this 4 stars, but the ending felt so abrupt and open-ended that it didn't feel like an ending at all. Overall, this book definitely has its flaws, but I did end up flying through the story. It was cute, and it felt like it was bringing something different to the genre, or at least different from your typical young adult romance.

"Is he Esmerelda's person? Does he say good morning to her in a way that's reassuring? To where it feels like he's holding her hand for the entire rest of the day until he says good night? Would she be happy for him if his happiness meant that she couldn't be with him?"

I can't stand reading stories with a teenage protagonist anymore, this type of character irritates me a lot. But I think it's a sign that the author built the characters well since teenagers are really annoying, right? Anyway, things were resolved all at once in the final 10% of the book, I found it a little cliché and shallow.

Star Rating: 2.5 Stars
For the first, I don't know, 60% of this book I was fully prepared to give this a solid 1-2 rating.

Its a little on the problematic side, the characters are more or less unbearable, and I found the vast majority of the book to be super cringe-y.

But sometime around the 60% mark, I found myself inexplicably hooked on this book. I couldn't stop listening and I ended up finishing the rest of the book in a single afternoon.

Now should I bump a book up because it was surprisingly addicting? I don't know. It doesn't erase all the wrinkles I developed from scrunching my face up after hearing something completely distasteful. So I'm going to bump it up a half point, but mark it a 3 and call it a day.

SHUT UP I LOVED THIS. Coming of age, themes of mothers and children, story within a story within a story, friendship and a completely oblivious female MC, sweet young romance, new adult love with heavy themes. So well done.
