The Passage

Justin Cronin

It’s hard to rate this novel, since I found it very uneven. I feel it’s like a mix of Michael Crichton, MR Carey, The Strain trilogy, and Walking Dead, which should have been a winning concept, but it didn’t manage to maintain quality all the way through.

The beginning was really intriguing and had me hooked right away. But I had a hard time keeping track of all the characters, so when it skipped forward and introduced a whole new set of characters I was slightly discouraged, and it took a while before it managed to catch my interest again. And it went on like that throughout the book, some parts were really good, and others were bland padding. I actually skimmed through bits and pieces that felt reduntant.

But since I managed to get through almost 800 pages, I suppose it was alright.

Somewhere between two and three stars, really. It was too long, but I liked the characters.

I loved this trilogy! Gripping, thrilling I couldn’t put it down! Found myself wanting to tell my friends all about it! Highly recommended

A fascinating apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic thriller with a large cast of characters that are markedly individual from each other and incredibly well-drawn and sympathetic - this novel really, truly, is difficult to put down. The timeline of events is detailed and realistic, as are the descriptions of the real life locations in the novel (as someone who lived in Memphis, I was pleased to see the inclusion of actual Memphis landmarks, street names, and descriptions of neighborhoods using their colloquial names - Cronin did his research), but the best part of this book are the characters. Cronin puts so much life in these characters that, when they do end up dying (and there is a lot of death in this novel), the loss feels real.

All in all, an excellent first novel in this series and a fast, fun read.

Very different approach to multiple character introduction - it is slowly starting to come together though and I like the ebb and flow of the story thus far.

Towards the middle there are too many characters for me to recall and keep straight. I felt the need to make myself a chart.

Creative writing with dialogue and the such. I really enjoyed the story and it's progression. Slow at times, like any novel, but totally worth the read. I highly anticipate the next in the series.

Unlike the review by Stephen King, it took me more than 5 pages to get into, but it was worth sticking around to read and finish. There were dull parts and sometimes the writing seem incoherent, but for the most part it was a good epic. The ending does make me want to read the rest of the series, cause after 700+ pages, I am caught up in the characters and need to know their fates.

The one thing that bugged me the most about the book is the shift in characters. For the most part, the book follows one guy for about a 1/3 of the way through. Then times shifts and you get a whole slew of other characters for the rest of the book. I understand the shift and the reason of switching characters, but it still bugged me that I got invested in one character for a good chunk of the book only to have to stop caring about him and move onto a different group of people.

I'll definitely try and go through the rest of books someday.

This book about a pre and post apocalyptic world after a medical experiment gone wrong had me hooked from the beginning. It was slow to read but not because it was badly written but rather because I wanted to read each word so that I didn't miss anything. It came highly recommended and I'm really glad I took the time to read it. I'm recommending it to my husband because I think it will be a book he will enjoy as well.

I tried this book twice, once in print and this time in audio, but I just can't get past the dull beginning. So many people recommend it though, I am not crossing it entirely off my list.
