An excellent novel! Cronin entices you into a world that is terrifyingly similar to our own and creates characters that are beautiful and heartbreaking. For anyone who is a fan of the dystopian genre, I would highly recommend this novel. It takes the genre subverts it with elements of thrillers/horror.

Mr. Cronin does have quite an active imagination. The book was generally not intense or fast paced, although it did have its moments. It was a well thought out and articulated story with reliable characters. It did, however drag at times and the ending left me wanting more. I don't know, maybe there is a sequel in the making, but I felt a little short changed with the way it all ended.
I did like the new take on vampires and how the plague was started and spread throughout the land. I don't want to give too much away, so I will just leave it at that.

I love the overal.tale, but too much backstory for minor characters. was super disappointed about having to leave the story introduced in the early part of the book and not being allowed back to those people for 600 pages
This is an apocalypse story as brilliantly written and gripping as you can imagine. With a sense of our fear of things that go bump in the night as keen as Stephen King's but with an ear for dialog and a sense for characterization that is frankly surpassing, it's the kind of book you may find yourself reading late into the night.

I really enjoyed this dystopian novel. It fits me well because not only do we see the aftermath of the cataclysmic event, but we see what led to it. That is my cup of tea. I always want to know what happened to cause the apocalypse and not nearly enough books fulfill that desire. That being said, I know this is a trilogy but I am stopping at book one. I feel like the first book dragged on too long and I definitely do not need another 1200+ pages to finish out the story. In my mind, it's closed.
A real page-turner, but I thought the characters needed some work. Particularly with an epic book like this that spans a large time period, you want to spend more time getting to know the people you're sharing your journey with. Disappointing ending as well. Read THE STAND!
3.5 I think? This book was exciting, and interesting, and well written. But good Lord was it long. And I know it FELT long in many places. A great read, just a bit much.
