It was an excellent book to get lost in and I'm loving that this was my entrance into Nigerian mythos.

That being said, I'm still confused about how the magic system functions, it felt half formed almost? And the build up to them meeting took ages with the last 2 chapters feeling INSANELY rushed. Not a fan of the pacing or the ambiguous magic system.
Like they were expected to take down the Eze with days of training (if even that) and it only took a few paragraphs? I'm confused.

PROS: The world building was great, it gave a direction of where everything was, the social politics with individual villages, the capital and how interactions/hierarchy existed within relation to those two things. The interactions between the two characters with the people surrounding them was really good and I felt like there was a good amount and really well executed character development for most of the characters.

CONS: Everything happened in the last two chapters. It took WAY too long for the girls to meet each other and it was too much world/climax building. There was no real development of how to use their powers, they seemed to finally realize that they had powers in the end and it was like oh wow I can do stuff…there was no learning/teaching/control stage like it was straight to lets take out the king on a whim. Then they “met” when both happened to end up in the same room and one twin was already pretty much dead. But the thing that really made me drop stars was the unrealistic fight that resulted in the king’s death. How is it that two young girls with no battle experience, no control on their powers and no plan took down a man with immense power how had CENTURIES to learn to wield that power? IT DIDN’T MAKE SENSE.

OVERALL: The book was decent. I would say that I will read the next book in the series, partially to see how it ends and to see if the second book is an improvement. But I am not rushing to read it or would start it before finishing other books.

Story picks up towards the middle but ultimately the end
fell a bit flat and felt anti -climatic

I loved the pacing of the book, the unfolding of the story. I loved how human each girl was in their roles instead of them just suddenly knowing everything. I loved how every character was Black and treated with depth.

Two sisters separated at birth that do not quite fit in but are special in their own ways go on incredible journeys to find themselves in a world with a tyrannical leader.

This story is an investment, a beginning. You go on the journey with them and you learn about two very different types of life in an African empire.

Any fan of fantasy would love this book, but this book really spoke to the part of me that wished for books like my whole life (before I discovered Octavia Butler and N. k. Jemisin). I look forward to the sequel.

The stunning cover was the main reason why I decided to pick up this book. However, I found it difficult to stay focused on the story and the characters. It was a challenge for me to stay engaged and understand where the plot was heading. Unfortunately, I had to stop reading at page 61 and mark it as a DNF.
