The stunning cover was the main reason why I decided to pick up this book. However, I found it difficult to stay focused on the story and the characters. It was a challenge for me to stay engaged and understand where the plot was heading. Unfortunately, I had to stop reading at page 61 and mark it as a DNF.

I wanted to love this book, I really did. The cover is amazing, the premise intriguing, the setting speaks to the imagination... But the book failed to deliver on almost every point. It drags on, the first 3/4 feel more like an introduction than an actual book, and when it finally starts to get interesting, the book ends. That's it. Done. Finished. Story over.

Disappointed, and not sure I'll muster the energy to read the second book.

Before I even get into this review, let me highlight the gorgeous cover!! Seriously!! Two absolutely stunning Black girls! I love it!!! The braids, the afro, the gold, the cowrie beads! Majestic! I didn’t know it yet, but this fabulous cover was a sign of what I was in for with this book. So let’s get into the review...

I was hooked from the VERY FIRST PAGE! Which is how you want to write your fantasy story. I am a sucker for fantasy with great storylines, proper world building and good character development. ‘Daughters of Nri,’ gave me ALL of that and then some. Listen, storyline-IMMERSIVE, world building-PHENOMENAL, character development-TOP NOTCH!

When I tell you my heart was beating for every tense scene Esinaala or Sinaikuku was plunged into, believe it. At one point I had to tell myself it wasn’t real because of how immersed I became in the story. I was worried for the safety of these characters. I crossed my fingers and whispered silent prayers for the protection of these characters that had grown on me. I loved Esinaala’s fierce and headstrong attitude, but I loved MORE that she was always willing to admit when the team of 4 had a better plan than her and go with that. I loved that despite her fear, she trudged on and never back down, even when it cost her. Moment of silence for our favourite monkey, Enwe. Reni, how were you able to make feel attached to a monkey who only got a handful of pages?

I love an excellent African mythology story.

Daughters of Nri is a book that I had started in Audible but did not focus enough on the story and then put it down because I "lost interest." one day, like a year after I had gotten the audiobook, I was like, alright while I am working on my craft let me listen to an audiobook to pass the time and decided let me give this story another shot.

Well, I am glad that I did. First, one has to commend the narrator of this story; her voice was very captivating, which brought the beautiful words of Reni Amayo to life.

The story is very slow-moving, and you are given A LOT of background information before diving into the action, but it keeps the reader wanting to read the sequel because we are left on a cliffhanger.

Such a well written story, great found family, female rage, a splash of romance and a quest to save the world. The pacing was great and there were no boring parts to this story. The action starts right away.

I'm not sure if I want more of the story or just more of the world itself, so rich and lovely but it doesn't leave me gasping for the sequel.
