The first 2/3 of the book was great. I am not sure I agree with the last 1/3. I have nothing against meat eating. But when the author succumbs to hyperbole and sentimentalism and somehow paints hunting as an idealized experience, I had to smother a twinge of irritation. the rest of it was eye-opening. This is definitely a must read.
Don't pick up this book if you don't want to think about what's on your plate! "The Omnivore's Dilemma" is truly a book that will change your thinking and your diet. I will never buy anything but grass-fed beef now. Since I read the chapter on corn, I have been checking labels and I can't believe just how many processed foods and beverages contain corn syrup; no wonder Americans are huge and getting fatter all the time. The food industry is no friend of the people's --they are most definitely NOT looking after our health.
All this being said, Pollan is an engaging storyteller/reporter and "The Omnivore's Dilemma" never gets mired in hysterics. Pollan simply reports what he's found out about the American food industry and where, exactly, our food comes from. He even takes on the organic food industry and what he writes about it is also definitely food for thought.
Two words: read it!

a great read for anyone who cares where their food comes from. very enlightening!
Excellent book! More or an exploration of the food and the way man gathers and eats it as opposed to an indictment. An eye opener in terms of the industrial food chain and "big organic".

i like part i, about how corn is in everything, the most. there is a lot of info (tho it may be missing some by todays standards). it gripped me in a way a book hasn’t in a while.
part iii on hunting and gathering can be skipped as it is overly long, tedious and unhelpful.

This book is interesting once you get past the first three of for chapters on corn. It's hard to read this book and continue to chose to eat industrialized beef, chicken or processed foods. I recommend it as motivational if you need a reason to start eating healthy. Definitely not recommended if you want to continue to enjoy that occasional fast food hamubuger.
Pollan's style is informative and humorous but I would recommend the Botany of Desire over this one. The Omnivore's Dilemma reads like the expose it is but the Botany of Desire reads almost like a love story.
