Somehow, this book went by faster than all of the others. The plot was very exciting, and I enjoyed Starflight as a narrator more than I thought I would. Like Clay, it was endearing that he had so many positive thoughts about the other dragonets, and his crush on Sunny finally struck me as cute. (Up until now, I've accepted it as an unfortunate reality that most of the characters are going to get love interests, and Sunny and Starflight seemed like the obligatory main characters being pushed together. Somehow, hearing things from Starflight's POV convinced me that this pairing isn't being shoehorned into the story, and I hope that'll hold true for Sunny's POV novel next!)
Also, shout-out to Fatespeaker. She is lovely and sweet and slightly more nuanced than the other alternate dragonets of destiny (who all intrigue me very much). She's gotten the most screen time of her group, and my greatest fear is that she will be forced into a love triangle with Starflight and Sunny. I would accept this only if it's Sunny that both Starflight and Fatespeaker have a crush on, in which case, Sunny has more than one hand. Just please, do not give me more female characters who are antagonistic towards each other and feel the need to compete, especially if it's all because of a male character.

i’ll admit that this is probably my least favorite book of the original five, but even so, it still SLAPS. the ENDING of this book??? the literal world coming apart under the dragonets’ feet as their emotional world comes apart too?? do you remember being a kid and reading this book and the plot twist in the last chapter just picks you up and crushes your brain like a fucking peanut shell? oh my god
All hail Queen Glory!
Book four was simply a masterpiece. Every minor issue I could nitpick is addressed. Every one of the main characters has an important role to play. The world and characters are richly developed and the story as a whole takes such a hairpin turn that I have no idea what will happen next in this series.
For the intended juvenile audience, this is an action-packed adventure full of cool things like dragons, magic, volcanoes, and intense battles. Warning for parents, this book has frequent depictions of death and violence at a level we haven't seen since book two. Also, the Nightwing kingdom is a horrible, dismal place and they have taken many other dragons prisoner, and treat them terribly.
For the older readers, there are interesting themes within this story. Themes of how damaging times of war can be, how important it is to realize the humanity (dragonity?) of enemy nations. That, even in the worst of places, the average citizen is not responsible for what's going on and may be suffering greatly due to their leadership.
There is a theme of forgiveness and finding a peaceful option, and the sheer respect that showing mercy and being the better dragon can bring. There is closure, with Starflight finding the bravery to tell Sunny that he loves her. There is revelation, where the prophecy is fake and the mind reading powers may have been made up too (I love how the author never confirms or denies this ability).
Although this is Starflight's story, everyone has a place in it. Tsunami, beating up Nightwing soldiers, preventing Sunny from being kidnapped, and being her usual self. Sunny, learning that Starflight is in love with her. Clay, who saves Starflight's life at the end of the book. And Glory, genius strategist who staged an invasion and rescued her kin without any violence, willing to forgive her worst enemies, queen of two entire tribes.
Where the story will go now, I cannot say. Queen Glory has two tribes to rule and, based on the epilogue, a major battle coming her way. Starflight was badly injured and possibly blinded. No doubt Sunny would want to stay in the rainforest to care for him. The prophecy is fake. Anything can happen from here, and I am looking forward to it.

While I did enjoy the book, I found it hard to focus on all parts of the story. Some were interesting and others I had to rewind because I zoned out. I always hoped that the NightWings, in general, would be much cooler but they have not lived up to my expectations. Starflight, IMO, did not redeem himself. Yes, he did good and he saved his tribe and he figured out the secret but it wasn’t enough for me to take him out of last place in my dragonet ranking. I wanted more for and from him.
Starflight's not my favorite dragonette, but this installment moved the story along nicely.
