Four stars? Yup – I liked it way more than either of the previous two, and there won't be any more in the series, for which I am profoundly grateful. I love Sookie. I love her strength, her enthusiasm, her resilience. I love spending time with her. I even love her mad fashion. But her world was making less and less sense, and it was fast running out of characters to form convoluted plots with. I am glad to be done with this series.
Also, I'd stopped caring about who Sookie ended up with. Pretty much everyone was a bad idea. And while we're on that subject: bad sex alert. Holy cow. Bad. Sex. *shudder*
So there you have it. This book makes slightly more sense than the previous books, but it's nowhere near as strong as the start of the series was.

LOL. I guess I can't in good conscience give this book a 1 star, since I usually reserve that for books I am literally in mental pain while reading, but.
It was pretty bad.
We all knew that Harris was a COMPLETE SELL OUT when suddenly a few books ago, THE ENTIRE CROWD AT MERLOTTE'S WERE SINGING "BAD THINGS" BY JACE EVERETT IN PERFECT UNISON AND EVERYONE KNEW EVERY WORD. Alright Charlaine, we know your series got picked up to be a TV show. We know. WE KNOW.
But she wrote herself right into a corner with this series, with all the heart falling out of it long ago, with only the residual interest in the (ideas) of the characters keeping people interested. (At least, that was the case with me.) The worst part was that this was just like every other book ever. At least, just like the terrible last handful of books. Someone died, people find out who really killed them. Nothing unique happens. Sookie continues to check her e-mail and pull her hair into ponytails. She continues to have man-drama, and Eric continues his OOC race toward becoming one of the most Completely Ruined Characters In Trashy Lit History.
The book ends just as every other Sookie book has. Nothing unique. Noting to set it apart. Nothing to "resolve" the story. Supposedly, she'd settled down with the man she wants to be with forever (I'll just say that, while we were expecting it, it still felt rushed).
Overall. Meh.

The one thing that I can say is consistent with Harris' writing, she knows how to write a page turner. There wasn't a moment that I wanted to put the book down; I wanted to know how it would all come out in the end. But aside from that and who Sookie ended up with, I found the book to be a disappointment. Claude as the main villain was just a stretch. The author even had her characters say that the reasoning didn't make sense, because it is! And I didn't like the appearance of almost every single character Sookie has every interacted with returning to help her now! But I was happy she ended up with Sam. It's the only love interest she could ever actually have a future with. Friendship really is an important foundation.
I have to say that reading all the way through this (okay, skimming) just made me angry. When did these books become 300 pages of nothing happening?
I sure am glad you wrote this the way you wanted it to end, Ms. Harris, because you seem to be the only one who liked it.
As for my opinion? Meh. The enjoyment factor of the books has decreased exponentially with each one. I've got no interest in how Sookie eats all those tomatoes, nor do I care how about how many times she needs to check her emails..
My one star rating was because I had to skim in order to even make it through.
Farewell Sookie. You used to be interesting.

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I'm happy with the way Ms. Harris ended the series. She was very clear early on with general characteristics in regards to the person she'd end up with so I was not upset or surprised. I felt she tried to bring back most of the series' characters and tie things up, and she did that quite successfully. I, for one, enjoyed this book. I'm sure I'll re-read the series in a year or two.
I did enjoy this book and the entire series. I love when a series sucks you in so completely. I haven’t wanted to read anything except this all month! I didn’t love that this last book switched POVs. No other book in the series did that. Charlaine Harris is now one of my favorite authors. I will definitely read more of her books!
Wow! That was convoluted!
I predicted some time back that by the final book Sookie would most likely be paired off with him by the end and it looks like I was right. I really like the character and all but I was hoping that wouldn't have happened in the long run - I was actually kind of hoping she'd end up single or with a new character (or at least a non-supernatural one).
I did like the return of a few of the villainous characters from previous installments, but overall this book rates a "meh" - not good, not bad just "meh." I think I only read this installment for the closure and to say I'd completed the series. I must admit though it didn't really feel to me like it offered that much closure. It didn't feel like the final installment of a 13 part series and maybe that's because the author really plans on closing up the series with one last to-be-published short story apparently featuring characters that didn't get much screen time in the novel.

As I mentioned when I wrapped up Deadlocked a few days ago, I waited forever to finish this series. And honestly, I always thought I would hate it, especially after seeing so many criticisms about the last book, but you know what, I liked both Deadlocked and Dead Ever After and am glad I finally finished them.
Perhaps I liked them so much because I waited so long and there was a nice break for me. I have always said and still believe the series went on too long. However, I found both #12 and #13 satisfying. I know it's not a popular opinion, but I feel Sookie ended up with the right person, and I believe Eric showed his true colors, and didn't all of a sudden get weak.
I think I may pick up the wrap up, After Dead, before the month is out, and then I can feel like I at least accomplished one of my goals this year.

It took me a while to get my hands on this and I read it in one setting. In a way I am sorry for Sookie and all the heartache she has had in her life. I'm satisfied with the ending and I wonder if the fans that were so outraged by it were mixing their love of the TV show with the love of the books. There are some minor loose threads but nothing that left me stomping my feet wanting more chapters to the book. I hope that she will still write short stories in this universe even if they are not about Sookie.
