WAY better than the first book in the series.

Not as good as the first but not a huge drop in quality; taking the story out of Bon Temps and putting it in Dallas might have been the problem.

Eric Northman is the best.

This was a fun reread! The plot structure of this one is slightly strange, as a mystery is introduced in the beginning that then promptly takes second stage to another major plot arc. The initial mystery then isn't revisited until the last 100 pages, after the plot of the major storyline has been wrapped up.

Other than that strange structure, this was a fun read.

I enjoyed it more than the first book, I guess because character exposition wasn't quite as important now that we know the characters and don't just get surface details. I was legitimately interested in the "mystery" behind this novel, and it threw me for a loop a few times. I'm intrigued enough to go on to book #3, which I never thought I would be. Good job, Charlaine Harris - just smutty enough to be intriguing, but not so smutty that it's just stupid.

Not gonna lie, this is maybe a bit oversexed in parts, but the plot is interesting and boy do I want to see Sookie grow further.

i did like this book once it was coming to the end as it did start out a little boring but the you get to about chapter 7 and things start to happen.
i also started to like eric in this book as some of the humour was coming through i never thought i would end up liking him but for some reason i did.

This book is where Harris really starts playing with multiple plots and multiple threads. It is all very successful and interesting, and the layers of Sookie start to become more pronounced and we see how being involved with vampires affects Sookie, but also her growing confidence in herself and especially her telepathy. Harris dramatically grows the world, introducing us to more vampires, supes and hierarchies. This isn't my favorite book in the series, but it is instrumental in Sookie's growth, her evolving relationship with Bill and Eric, and is a very enjoyable read. For those familiar with the TV show this is where the show heavily begins to veer from the books and I still think the books are far superior.

3.5 stars.

Really, this book is two stories combined into one, and both of them feel like they weren't QUITE given the attention they deserved. There's a murder in Bon Temps, and it calls a maenad to town. Said maenad attacks Sookie and causes some minor chaos. Meanwhile, Sookie's been called to Dallas where the local vampires are having some issues with a crazy anti-vampire church and they need her to read some minds. Probably two thirds of the book is dedicated to the Dallas side of things, and while the story is a good one, filled with disturbing and creepy things and a nice expansion of our knowledge of the supernatural world (Barry the Bellhop, other shapeshifters, werewolves), it does feel a little bit rushed at times.

Meanwhile, the maenad is meant to be this huge scary monster with the power to tear people apart with her bare hands, but there's barely time to find her scary because the story of Lafayette's murder, the sex parties and how the maenad is linked to them is crammed into a handful of chapters. And while there's a lot of pretty dark and creepy stuff in that handful of chapters, it still feels like that storyline could have been spread out over the course of an entire book and fleshed out fully rather than tacked on as an afterthought. Really, it feels like a way to shoehorn Eric into Sookie's life. Everything was wrapped up a little too neatly for something that was explored in about 60 pages, and as a result it just didn't really work for me.
