Finally, some consecutive publishing..... last novel and this one were published in 1975. Maybe she wrote them back to back??

There is definitely a different tone with this one. The first one was the 1950's nuclear family. Very Ozzy and Harriett/ Leave it to Beaver tone. This one screams mid 70's Women's Movement. There is a TV in the home that gets watched, Dad gets laid off and has to take care of the house/ kids (mom still has to cook dinner every night after work), Mom goes to work full time, the hazards/costs of Dad's smoking!! Reminds me of Mr. Mom, which didn't come out until the early 80's.

The plots are getting better.

So, I originally read the entire "Ramona" series as a kid. I remember going to Barnes and Nobel eagerly every month to pick out the next book during my eight-year-old school year, as the library near our house was undergoing renovations (and thus closed for a year). Today, I just needed something wholesome to read with how the world is going, and I remembered one of my favorite books in the series, "Ramona and Her Father". It was an easy read, and I really recommend people reread it as an adult. As a kid I just loved that her dad drew pictures with her and didn't yell like mine did. As an adult, I was able to appreciate the struggles he and the family went through.

For those with kids, it's a fantastic book for when your income is suddenly down and kids are old enough to know (like right now). It's charming, heartfelt, and the story is timeless enough that kids nowadays will appreciate it.

This entry of the Ramona series finds her father losing his job at the beginning of the story and follows the family as they cope with that change. Ramona's father also quits smoking at the behest of his daughters. Cleary does not shy away from difficult topics, and does a nice job of portraying the kinds of thoughts, emotions, and worries any young child would have at the uncertainty of what the future will bring.

I love how realistic Cleary's portrayal of a money-insecure household is, but this isn't my favorite in the Ramona series because it makes me a little bit sad.

Ramona is in second grade and life is rough. Her older sister Beezus is moody, her father lost his job, and her mother is going back to work full-time. Maybe having her dad around all the time isn't the best thing. Plus, Ramona wants to play a part in the Christmas pageant, but her dad is no good at sewing. Will Ramona's lamb costume be done in time?

I didn't remember this one as well, but I'm sure I read it as a child. It was fun this time discovering some new things that I had forgotten. A great addition to the series!
