Somewhere between a police procedural and a PI, as the investigator is a retired police inspector. The characters are wonderful (especially the elephant). I look forward to more in this series.

Cute little book, very similar to the books from Alexander McCall Smith, although far more deep into magic realism and more raw into its description of the city of Mumbai and its inhabitants. By no means perfect, makes a couple of leaps of wild leaps and becomes predictable, yet it is an entertaining and cute story. The characters are comfortable and easy to like.
If you want an uncomplicated story, with a set of characters with their heart in the right place, plus a police story mixed in with some fantastic events, it is a good book.

A decent mystery book, not particularly memorable but enjoyable enough for a quick read.
A pretty unbelievable story, but a fun book to read when I needed a distraction from everything going on in the world right now.
I loved this book. I didn't really know what to expect as I hadn't read any by Vaseem Khan before. It was quite a different crime story/book to what I normally read but it was terrific. A few laughs along the way and no blood and gore. Inspector Chopra and his wife Poppy are endearing characters and look forward to seeing how they develop in the other books in the series
When I first started this book, I was really enjoying it. But the plot just took too long to really get going. I accidentally missed a chunk in the middle of the book, decided to keep going anyway, and it didn't seem to matter in the end. The central mystery ended up being really interesting but the build-up to it was too slow and anti-climatic for me. Plus, I was frequently worried to the point of distraction about the care and treatment of the baby elephant. This is definitely an easy, gentle mystery book that doesn't require a lot of concentration and sometimes that's exactly what you're looking for. I'm glad to have kept reading until the end but I don't know that I will pick up any of the others in the series.
Okay it started a bit weird, then got a lot of fun with his Elephant sidekick.
I will start this review by saying that I don’t really like mysteries. This is another book that was in my audible library, but I’m not quite sure why (I think it was another Audible sale impulse purchase). This book started off quite slowly. It is the first book in a series and as such a fair amount of background and introduction of characters was needed. It was kind of a slog. In the end the story was marginally interesting, but fairly shallow and I just didn’t connect with the characters. Also, the addition of the elephant as a character, while adding some comedy and ‘human’ interest to the story just didn’t really work for me. The writing was decent and at some point in the future I might be willing to try the second book in the series just to see if the story is more interesting now that the background work is done, but unless you’re really hard up for something to read I’d give this a pass.
