Very enjoyable read. This is a new series I will definitely be following!

DID NOT FINISH

I don't know why but I just couldn't get into this book. I loved the premise and really wanted to like it but it never sucked me in, to the point that I couldn't even force myself to finish it...maybe I'll give it another try sometime :(

What a charming book!

This was just what I needed after some heavier reads. I have not read The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, but something about this book reminds me of Alexander McCall Smith's Scotland Street series.

Is this a deep read, a potential Pulitzer winner? No, but it is entertaining, and Khan's writing is descriptive without going overboard. He brings Mumbai to life for the reader.

This was an unexpected pleasure. I enjoy discovering new cozy type mystery series, especially one from a diverse author, creating diverse characters.

A delightfully fun read about a newly retired police officer in India and Baby Ganesh (a baby elephant), a gift from Chopra's uncle. Chopra's wife, Poppy, is also a delight.

Absolutely delightful story full of details about a region I’ve never been to or studied.

My grandmother loved this series, and I did too. She and I both found the elephant and detective delightful as they solve a high-stakes mystery.

Inspector Chopra just quit his beloved job because the doctor told him to take care of himself after an incident that shocked his wife and himself. As like any other men who have worked most of their lives, he didn’t know what to do with his early retirement. His elusive uncle sent him a surprise in the form of an elephant after his death. Luckily it was a baby elephant, but still, it was hardly a suitable pet in the police apartment that he and his wife was living in. He named the elephant Ganesh after Ganesha the Hindu God of prosperity and wisdom, not knowing that the elephant would have certain inexplicable supernatural powers that could help him in his new sleuthing adventure.

I wanted to like this more than I actually did. The story was not bad per se, it was just a little lacking in the excitement area. I do wonder though, if it is only because it is the first in a series. I realize sometimes this happens in mystery series because the author takes their time to lay down all the setting and characters instead of focusing more on the mystery or case. So, I suppose I will be giving the series another shot. After all, I have already bought the second book (bought it together with the first).
