SPOILERS.
Let me just start by saying that while I wholeheartedly adore all of the other books by this iconic duo, ONE SMALL THING was a colossal failure and it honestly ruined my night.
The only reason this book has 2 Stars is because of Chase. He’s the best character in the book, but that’s not saying much.
But my main issue is the blatant abuse.
There are certain tropes, when I read about them, it puts me in a bad mood for the rest of the day bc it brings me back to my own experiences as a kid being emotionally and mentally abused. When these themes are present, it overshadowed everything else about the book so I can’t really focus on anything else.
I’ve always preferred the Parents Who Dont Care trope, but that’s just me. Helicopter parents are bad enough living with, I don’t want to read about it too, especially when our MC clearly has been conditioned to believe that if she does everything right, they won’t treat her like this, and this is only happening to her because it’s her fault.
In this book, the MC lost her sister 3 years before and is dealing with her parents being hopelessly overbearing.
In the first few pages, we see them sabotage her college applications, because they’ve already decided where she’s going (she’s not leaving she’s doing online college). First red flag.
She lashes out against her parents and goes out to a party and sleeps with a mysterious guy— who turns out to be the guy who killed her sister 3 years ago and was just let out of juvie. Predictable
She develops a relationship with him, but of course he finds out who she is and he freaks. She just can’t stay away from him though!! Maybe if there had been more about their night together, I can relate more to the character, but instead I just was tuned into her head after The Sex, not during. So all the swooning she did? I didn’t relate.
The entire book from there on was her friends & parents being so horrible to her. They speak for her, they disregarded everything she had to say & they relentlessly bully Chase (The Boy) going so far as to frame him for crimes to get him arrested again.
The few times she tries to get up and defend him, her friends shun her, and then the next day act like everything is okay. But then we realize that her friends have been updating her parents about all of this. Cue the abusive behavior.
They take away her car and her phone. Okay, that’s a normal punishment for a teen.
They take away her door....why?? I honestly have no clue other than humiliation.
They call her job and her volunteering gig and quit on her behalf, without her knowledge.
They track her location, print out her text message history, ransack her room because they’re convinced she’s on drugs, and out alarm system on all the doors so they know if she ever leaves the house.
All of this for what? She’s not a bad kid? Her friends are manipulative as fuck and no one decided to listen to anything she has to say until she was almost raped by her sisters old boyfriend& her parents almost hit her with their car.
After all of this, she forgave and forgot everything and moved away to college with Chase and got a happily ever after.
An entire book of mental abuse and it was wrapped up in less than two chapter at the end. This book left me with an icky gross feeling inside, and I’m really disappointed in it.

I enjoyed it. I found the last 2 chapters satisfying.
I think Chase was the best character. He's no saint, but he doesn't make me want to stab my eyes out sometimes.
I get why everyone hates Chase, but they act as if he walked up and gutted Rachel on her doorstep.

One Small Thing is about family relationship, friendship and romantic relationship.
Beth is trap in her parents strictness and decisions. Her future depends on her parents decisions. It started when her sister, , died in a car accident. She met Chase in a party and instantly got attracted. She found that Chase was responsible for her sister’s death and she completely understand it. Chase, on the other, got out of the juvie after he got involved in a car accident that killed Beth’s sister. He is in guilt and even though attracted to Beth, he couldn’t risk a possible relationship.

I received an ARC for an honest review
I gave this book 4.25 stars. I enjoyed the book, I pretty much read it in one sitting, however, there were a lot of things that drove me kind of crazy.
I feel such a connection to this girl. She loves to read. She volunteers at an animal shelter. She uses the word Parentals in reference to her parents. I do all of these things. I also have an older sister by two years, although she has not died in a horrible accident. Yet. The only difference being that I would have told Jeff and most of her friends to fuck right off. I have zero patience for people like them.
This novel follows our protagonist Beth and the aftermath of her sister's death. The story really makes you think about your own relationships with your siblings and how you would react if they met the same fate.
Chase is the boy Beth knows she shouldn’t like, but does. She really can’t help herself. I couldn’t help myself either, despite his past, Chase is a really good guy. The initial meeting between Chase and Beth was probably my personal favorite part of the book. Before the two of them knew who the other was before they felt the weight of the world on their shoulders. We get a brief glimpse at who they are and who they are together.
One thing Erin Watt has perfected is writing good antagonists. I can’t even express to you guys how much I hated some of the characters in this book.
My favorite part of every Erin Watt book is that the ending always justifies every horrible thing that happens during the novel. No matter how horrible some of the situations can get or how aggravating some of the characters are, you know it will come to a good peak.
Our protagonist's parents drove me absolutely insane. Talk about micromanaging. Also, thought the novel I wasn’t actually sure if I was supposed to like the protagonist's friends or not. For the most part, I didn’t like them but they would have these small moments of normalcy where I could see why she was friends with them in the first place.

I’ve read every Erin Watt book that’s been released. When an Erin Watt book shows up on my kindle I put pretty much everything else aside so that I can dive right in. Unfortunately, this one just didn’t do it for me. Let me explain why!
I couldn’t connect with the main characters. I found Beth to be a little bland and honestly kind of annoying. I felt she spent the majority of the book complaining, but didn’t do much to change her situation. Chase while a little more likeable, was equally as frustrating. Beth becomes completely enamoured with Chase but I didn’t feel the romantic connection between the two at all. I’ve seen tons of reviews talking about how this is an angst filled story but I didn’t get that at all.
I also found that this story to be very repetitive. There were honestly times that I thought maybe I screwed up and read the same part over again. Things were a bit predictable as well. I think the authors intended for the reader to figure things out fairly early on. When the ending came I felt that it was rushed. The ending had the potential to redeem Beth for me but it ended up falling a bit flat.
Overall, this book just wasn’t for me. I found the storyline interesting but I just couldn’t get into it. Despite the fact that I didn’t love this one, I can’t wait for the next Erin Watt book!

I loved this book! full review coming soon!
I like this book, didn’t love it, but liked it! It brought me to tears and had some heart pounding moments. It was a little dark but had great romance in it. The story centers around a girl named Beth who forgives and falls in love with a murderer (Charlie) who killed Beth’s sister, Rachel. I’m giving this review 4 stars out of 5 because there were some disturbing parts in the story. The parents were a little harsh to Beth and the kids at the school were bullies to Beth for falling in love with Charlie. Overall, it’s a great read filled with romance and a twisty side story of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST!
What can I say about this? It was so drama filled! I mean I enjoyed it but it was definitely more than I expected. But it perfectly fed my reading craving.
