I really enjoyed this adventure. It is a story about literature and reading, it’s magical and it’s about siblings and all the baggage that brings. Well done first novel and would definitely recommend.

4.5 stars. This reminded me a little of Shadow of the Wind. It is a bit of a love story for readers.

Spoiler I despised, hated, loathed the portion where it was discovered that the mom created Charlie and everyone treated her poorly for it. Given the chance I would have done the same.

Rob and Charley are pretty typical brothers, they fight but are fiercely protective of one another. What’s not typical is the secret they’re keeping: Charley sometimes accidentally reads characters right out of their books. When other fictional characters start showing up, they learn Charley may not be the only “summoner” and race to figure out what’s going on before it’s too late.

I’m a sucker for any book with fictional characters coming into the real world, and I love Dickens, so this shot to the top of my list the first time I heard of it.

It was a little dark for me and slow through the middle (maybe longer than it needed to be?) But how can I resist a story about stories and the power of the written word? Throw in Sherlock Holmes, multiple Darcys, and a Heathcliff with literal glowing eyes and I’m guaranteed to enjoy the ride. The mystery ended up reminding me of a fairly deep cut Star Trek reference, no idea if that was intentional or a coincidence, but it made me smile.

Let me start by saying that I completely understand why others rated this book higher. The premise is unique and amazing - a man who can summon book characters, not how they're written, but how he interprets them. Chaos ensues.... If you can stick with it, it's a really great story. That said, I almost DNF this book twice. It was too long. The author kept going back to the same plot points and rehashing them over and over again. The true action doesn't start until 65% of the way through the book (and then it really does get interesting). The main voice of the book, Rob, is unlikeable and uninteresting. The other narrators are lovely, though. Some of the plot twists are predictable. But, there are more that were truly surprising. 3.5 Stars.

Ho incontrato personaggi come Dorian Gray, Scrooge, Dracula etc etc
