i really struggled with the pacing of this one. the concept was really cool and i especially appreciated how a summoner's interpretation of a character affects how they become personified, that's such a cool idea but the idea itself was let down by the bizarre pacing. i can't tell if this needed to be faster or slower but it really did dull the book for me either way

I really enjoyed this mix of reality and fictional character. Good twists and plot lines but even though I can't put my finger on it there is something missing but I will definitely read from Parry again.

Very twee, and I'm already inclined to dislike stories about stories.
The writing on the line level was good, but there were repetitive parts. Rob would think something and then say it out loud. Every reference has to be explained every time it comes up.
I like the set up to Rob's character arc, I just wish it was handled with a little more subtlety. Let the reader connect Rob's inferiority complex with his aversion to reading Dickens, his brother's specialty (sidenote I also hate how even Charley's name is a reference).
I got about 150 pages in and I feel like I know a lot about the characters, but I think this also contributes to the repetitive feeling. Obviously I don't know how the rest of the book goes but it looks like it's setting up to front load the characterization to leave room for a more action-focused ending. And I just wish that had been a little more even. There was plenty of action in the pages I read, to be clear.

I was expecting something a little less dark and maybe more comforting that could be a regular reread, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped. It took forever to get through the climax but I did enjoy reference to all of the literary characters.

This book was filled to the brim with everything I love about reading! The characters and the characterizations of other authors’ characters was done so beautifully and believably. I had not expected it to be as funny, gripping, or emotional as it was which turned out to be wonderful in the best of ways. My favorite part was the familial relationships especially between Charlie and Rob.
Gods just so very good!!

Really enjoyed this one, Such an unusual concept, and I think H.G. Parry really captured Uriah Heep’s character, as I remember it from Dickens, which to be fair, I haven’t read in probably 25 years.

Spectacular! Don't let any niggly doubts about the conceit of this book put you off. The premise - which could have gone wildly wrong - is carried through with utter finesse by Parry, and I am now really, really excited about diving into her other novels. If you enjoy Alix E. Harrow's work, or Natasha Pulley, this'll be as resoundingly rewarding a read for you as I found it to be.
