The setting was effective but not intriguing — takes place in the Southwest but an authoritarian/strictly conservative version of the US stuck in an ambiguous but resource-intensive war that, somehow, drives the population to live like it’s the Wild West. Lesbian main character (Esther) runs away from home to join the Librarians, a group of women who distribute state-approved materials to far flung towns. Esther fears she is doomed to spread evil bc she is a lesbian and wants to do good to cancel out all the bad. Not shockingly, the Librarians actually distribute “deviant” materials on behalf of the resistance. Also they’re all gay. yeehaw!

I knew I was reading a fast paced book, so I was prepared for little to no background information and to be swept away in the story. The issue with this book is that we receive almost no background story, but the author wants to be mysterious and let us figure out things on our own. When we don't have any background and we're reading a shallow book, we can't read between the lines because the world building wasn't there for us to be able to do that.
At one point, one character said something while two other characters looked at each other and understood what she meant. The characters were able to understand that because they are in this story and in this world, but *I* had no idea what she meant or why it had to go down that way.
I liked the idea of this book and what this could have been, but it needed to be longer and give us more.

I always say I don’t like westerns but maybe I just don’t like men lol This queer western story with 4 queer women and 1 nonbinary person, are known as the Librarians. They travel around handing out books that are banned to people who are different. This was an easy read yet so riveting. They’re are fun fights with men trying to stop them. And these librarians work together even when there are fighting with each other because they know the work they’re doing is good. Highly recommend if you’re into westerns and even more recommend to those who aren’t.
