This one had all the elements to be awesome: queer folk and book folk and a dystopian wild west setting! but it was kind of boring and it flopped for me. It tried too hard to be cool and the romance between Esther and Cye felt forced. I needed more character development. And why did Esther get over her dead friend so fast?

This book set out to do a lot of things and then fell short. I wish the world had been more immersive and that the plot didn’t feel so rushed, but it was a fun story nonetheless. It read like a short story, honestly.

I’m adding a star simply because of the acknowledgment to the queer community at the end that made me cry.

“This is for you. This is for all of you. There’s a place for you in the future, and it’s better than you can possibly imagine. Please be there to meet it. We need you on our side.”

Such a cool concept. I felt like there wasn’t enough depth. Like I wanted it to be either more plot driven or more emotionally driven?

I really enjoyed this book! I loved the exploration of queer identity set against a kind of dystopian version of the Wild West. I also loved the the Librarians used their jobs to help a resistance movement. While I wish we learned a little bit more about the world, I love the idea of using reading materials to spread resistance to an oppressive government. Esther's discovery into this world and using the Librarians to help her figure out and come to terms with her queer identity was a really great story.
