Had high hopes for Ferrante after reading her Neapolitan novels, but I jsut never really loved this. It reminded me of the worst moments of the Neapolitan novels with none of the redeeming aspects.

lost me at some points but really enjoyed the writing! hello my italian girls

I was a big fan of the Neopolitan quartet so I wanted to read the rest of Ferrante’s books. The writing is just as strong in this book which really helps bring you into the novel and make you reflect. I would say the primary theme is motherhood which made it difficult for me to fully appreciate not being a mother myself

I really enjoy Ferrante's way of writing but I enjoyed this less than My Brilliant Friend. I realised like 1/3 of the way through that I had actually watched the film for this book before. That lessened my enjoyment of it weirdly because I feel like the tone of the book is quite a mysterious and you're not meant to know where the story is going. Nonetheless you really get into the head of the mother- it really emotionally affected me at points. She writes very honestly about her conflicted experience of raising children. And that was really moving.

firstly, what the fuck, secondly, this is such a visceral (but honestly wonderful) commentary on the dark underbelly of motherhood... i wish i read the content warnings before starting it but i think that added to the experience
