I don’t know if I get it. This is the first book of this author I’ve read, I wanted to read one of her other books but this was the only one my library had. I didn’t like the narrator but, that’s not necessarily something that is important to me. I think the narrator/ main character has deep internalized misogyny that affected her relationship with her daughters. I recently became a mother to a newborn boy and some of the things the narrator said about motherhood and parenting made me feel sick. It’s a quick read, but an unsettling one.
This book is about a woman, with grown children, who is suddenly on her own. She takes a trip to the sea and meets a young mother and some strange interactions occur, including her stealing a doll. It's hard to like a book when you don't like the main character. But that sort of is the point. And the commentary about motherhood did speak to me. So, three stars, but barely.
I picked this book because Elena Ferrante was all over the NYTimes top 100 Books of the Century and this was the book available. I'm curious enough that I'll read more by the author, but I'm a little wary.
