I read this book for an online Cozy Mystery Book Club. It's held on YouTube each month after we vote on twitter to pick the book of the month. The book is always the first book in a series. You can check out the book club here: https://youtu.be/yCUtspQsQd4 There are book giveaways and good discussions for fans of Cozy Mystery. So I highly recommend joining us if you like Cozies!

So here is what I thought of this book, and I can't believe I am about to say this but, too many cookies. Like the whole town of Lake Eden needs to be checked for type 2 diabetes. People just don't really eat that many cookies that often. Will Hannah branch out and make anything! anything besides cookies? Maybe a scone? or a nice muffin?

This was the mystery I wanted to be solved in this book; will Hannah's The Cookie Jar, branch out to various baked goods? Or will she just stick with cookies, which seems like a business model destined to fail?

The book was written in 2000, but I felt like the overall mood of the book was stuck in *maybe* the 80s. Sometimes it felt like it was the 1950s. Overall I didn't like Hannah, and I didn't understand why she was so involved in doing her BIL's job. Like Why? I have BILs and I am not going to do all sorts of things to help them get a promotion.

In general, I was annoyed that often Hannah's actions were to protect or promote a man. Bah. I found the supporting characters in the book were really underdeveloped esp. the last minute mention of a future suitor. Lots of scenes w/Hannah and her cat could have been used to tell me more about the people in the book. But really, who am I to talk? This is a very successful, beloved series of books. It's just not my scene!

3.5 ☆ Plenty cute

This is a cute, fun mystery. I recently watched the movie, and wanted to see what the books were like. I like the updates in the movie, because the book is a bit obviously dated.

I might continue the series, but I'm so tired of 'I'm not like other girls' characters. I'm just personally tired of narratives that judge other people for wearing or not wearing makeup and/or nice clothes..

This is a cute little mystery book. I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I started reading it. I picked it because I love to bake and I love mysteries. This is not on the same level of James Patterson or John Grisham so if that's what you're looking for it is not for you. I liked the characters they weren't really complex and even though there were twist in the story line I didn't find them very dramatic to where I was surprised.

The recipes that were added were very distracting to me because of their location. I think she should have saved them for the back of the book. I did like the fact that the character explained why she baked them or who she baked them for.

The book was cute but I wasn't extremely vested in the story or characters when it was over. It was a nice change of pace from the books I had been reading and I have the others but I wasn't hard pressed to immediately move on to the next book in the series.

Fluffy mystery that reads like a hallmark movie— and it is. Amateur sleuth and professional cookie baker Hannah Swensen helps solve a murder without a lot of realistic logic: Case in point - to drive the plot a dentist answers his own office phone, books appointments, and reveals patient information. —does this make any sense even in a small town? Recipes, fat shaming, and meddling mother included.

Suggested by an online reading challenge for mystery readers. Fun but a little predictable.

This book as a whole (the plot and characters and writing) was "fine" but I had a few complaints. First, there was a lot of excessive details about every person, every room, every route taken to every place visited. It felt a lot like hearing the story from a grandmother who wanted to work in all of the town's gossip in her narrative. I think that style might appeal to some people, I just am not those people. My bigger complaint, though, was that the narration was kind of judgmental. Characters were mocked and criticized for their weight, their interests, and their livelihoods not just by other characters but by the third person narrator. That did not sit well with me.
