This was a reread for me. It's a cozy mystery with a baker as the MC and has recipes in it. Is it great literary fiction? no. Is it a smart intriguing mystery? no. Are the characters like my BFFs? no. Do some of the things she writes in the book get my back up? yes. But somehow I always get sucked into these type books. They are my comfort food, like macaroni and cheese with bacon. Not something I can live on, but when I am anxious or stressed it takes me away.
I’ve seen a lot of bad reviews on this book. Mostly because I don’t think people understand what a cozy mystery is. Sex and crime are very downplayed. Not something hot and steamy. Everyone loved the Dukes of Hazard Especially Roscoe P Coletrain. So when the cops in the books are dump dumps we are quick to judge.
Hannah Swenson has opened her own bakery. She lives in a small town where probably the biggest crime is someone put enough quarters in the newspaper stand to get one paper but grabbed two if you get my drift. So when Hannah’s milk delivery guy is found shot out back, Hannah has teamed up with her brother in law to help solve the case of who killed Ron the delivery driver. but along the way another dead body is found and every suspect has been cleared until a phone call from her mom is the biggest clue to who murdered two people of Lake Eden.

First book of the series.
Hannah lives in a small town and someone is murdered. Not something that is usual. Especially the person who was murdered.
She owns a cookie shop and the delivery driver who is a stickler for being on time was murdered.
Because she was the first to discover him and she knew him pretty decently her cop brother in law asked her to keep an ear out for any details.
Which lead her to being the lead detective even though she’s not a detective at all. But a better one then her brother in law

I first want to start off this review by saying .. if you are getting into this book/series thinking it's going to be some Game of Thrones level writing or plot then maybe this isn't the series for you. Literally saw a whole NOVEL of a review written by someone who obviously didn't get the point of this at all ... even criticising the FICTIONAL cookies being made. c'mon, really?
Anyway, I've been getting more into this whole 'cozy mystery' sub-genre lately (and yes, I am someone who also reads those more serious/"game of thrones level books" so don't come for me) and I honestly did enjoy this first entry in this series! I will say it did drag a bit after we get the set-up of someone in town being murdered and only really picked up again when **SPOILER** another body is discovered **END SPOILER** but I can't say the overall journey bored me in anyway and no, the killer wasn't a huge surprise, but I also can't say I wasn't guessing right up to the last minute who it could be among the few townsfolk around so it was fun to finally found out who the culprit was. The end of the book also nicely sets up what's to come and seems to nicely lay out some potential plot threads that will (hopefully) be woven throughout the rest of these books. But however it's done, I'm excited and have a lot of catching up to do! I definitely recommend reading this if you enjoy murder mysteries but also don't want anything too "scary" or "gorey". Yes there is murder (which is in no way cozy) but there are cats and cookies (with recipes!) and silly family drama, some romance, and a very relatable protagonist (especially if you are a woman in your late 20s-early 30s or so?).
If you are hesitant to read this definitely just pick it up at your local library! I am starting the short novella in the back of this edition I got of Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder and am excited to see how it is.
