Connolly is a special writer, and quickly becoming a favorite. These books are a true pleasure to read.

John Connolly has quite a contradictory gift for writing - he writes beautiful prose but with chilling and very graphic crimes. Charlie Parker has decided he only wants to tackle white collar crime but he is approached by a rich former Senator with a request to investigate a young woman's death. Charlie once knew the woman in question so he agrees to take on the case. Fairly soon afterwards, he regrets it as anyone even remotely involved ends up dead. If you have a fear of spiders, this is not the book for you.

The third Charlie Parker novel continues the pattern of excellence established by the previous two novels, EVERY DEAD THING and DARK HOLLOW. Connolly is an impressive writer. He creates mood and suspense with a poetic voice that is unique and impressive. There are moments of comedy, but for the most part, he examines the darker side of humanity. In this novel he explore religion and religious extremism, not to mention morality and family. In less capable hands, this could have been a really dark, depressing novel. As it stands, it's an impressive glimpse into the darkness, with a promise of light somewhere to come.

The supernatural element really shines with this book. The religious, fanatical, zealot killers almost took on a supernatural quality themselves with how they could kill, move around, with impunity. Having his "trusty sidekicks" Angel and Louis were a plus. Killing off the golem is the book was a waste; that character would have been useful in Song of Shadows...and for such a bad ass, assassin, to be taken out as easily as he was let the character down.  Speaking of killing characters off too quickly, why kill the mafioso when he did; these characters should've stayed around for future intrigue. The relationship between Parker and Rachel is moving too quickly; it should've slowed down so the characters could become friends first.

I really like Charlie Parker and his two thuggish but cute sidekicks, Louis and Angel. My only hestation to award the full 5 stars is due to the extensive amount of detail that the author likes to get into about a lot of different subjects. I find my eyes glaze over and I start flipping pages to get back to what Charlie et al are up to. But I'm going to read the next book so I have to recommend this series. So far.

John Connolly's books are kind of like train wrecks, no matter how nasty, gruesome and disturbing you just can't quit reading them! This is the third in his revolting Charlie Parker series. I enjoy getting to know the afflicted Charlie, but his enemies....oh they are some spine-chilling hair-raising characters to say the least.
Once I stop having nightmares after this creepy-crawly book, I'll be cautiously and ghoulishly starting book #4. (Who is the afflicted one??)
