I don't really know how I feel about this. I flew through this but there was still something that left me unsatisfied. This definitely wasn't as good as the first book but it wasn't bad. I just don't really know what my problem with it is.

Liked it slightly less than the other books in the series, mainly because of how Father Christmas and Mary fell in love with each other completely out of nowhere. I expected it to happen, because the tales say Father Christmas' wife is a woman called Mary, but there could have been at least a few hints leading up to it.

A very sweet continuation of the origins of Christmas! All about finding hope in even the darkest of times. I loved the characters, and the end was perfect!
I'm honestly glad so many people love this book, but I bought it for the girls in three different families - and none finished it - we all thought it felt a bit sad and dark. Very Oliver Twist. I finished it to see if it got more magical and bright, and then I could suggest the families finish the story, but alas, I just didn't love it. We hadn't read The Boy called Christmas, and I see the movie trailer looks fabulous - maybe we needed to have read that first.

I was given this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this second entry in the Christmas series by Matt Haig. Amelia Wishart is a little girl who has more hope than any other child, even though her mother is sick and she has to work as a chimney sweep. Even after her mother dies, and she is taken to the workhouse by Mr. creeper, she has enough hope to power Father Christmas' first Christmas.
However, after a troll attack, Father Christmas cannot complete his Christmas deliveries, and Amelia starts to lose hope. Will she regain her hope and save Christmas.
A delightful mix of Artemis Fowl, Leminy Snicket, and Charles Dickens (who makes an appearance), this book will quickly become a holiday favorite!

I received this book as a download from Netgalley, thanks to the publishers. This book is an absolute delight, after A Boy Named Christmas I wasn't sure if the magic could be created again but Matt Haig smashed it out of the park! Delightful, heartwarming fairy tale suffused with the joy and spirit of Christmas, I can't wait to get hold of a physical copy to treasure. Young Amelia has an awful time after her mother dies and she is sent to the strictest workhouse in London and her hope is all but extinguished for a while. Meanwhile there are problems in Elfhelm and Father Christmas has his work cut our sorting them but when he and Amelia meet for the second time the magic truly begins and builds to an extremely happy ending. This book should be on everyone's Christmas list this year.

This was so great. While I still think the first book is superior, I absolutely loved how this was set in the Victorian Era and the cameos from Charles Dickens and Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were awesome. Also, THE CAT!!!! These books are just magical <3
trigger warnings: loss of a parent (terminal illness), loss of a parent (war), abuse.
