Just as brilliant as the last one. I found it uncomfortable a bit with how things went with Kazan, as I felt he got off easy (at least socially/in a legacy sense) in regards to his forced 'bargain' with Phedré, but overall it was a well told tale with great stakes and tension.
As with the previous book, the ending is interesting in that it goes on past the climax longer than you'd expect without doing an epilogue, and I'm left in a weird sort tension limbo. I don't think I'd like it if that was a more common way to write endings, but it works in these novels. I think I need a break before I read the next one.

This series might have the best religious world building in the entire fantasy genre.
Carey is remarkably good at creating an intelligent woman tangled in intrigue--who also happens to be the best courtesan ever. Her interpretation of real places and creative blending of timelines (especially when it comes to religion) continues to be enjoyable.
In my mind, this series is like a super-fastidious Game of Thrones...with less sex. (Well, and obviously it's focused on one person.)

After receiving new information regarding how the Goodreads algorithm works and how it can punish authors if they drop below 5 stars, I am only rating on a 5 or 1 scale now until it's fixed and there's room for nuanced discussion and reviews.

yeah, this just happened. i can't help myself, these books are GOOD. i um, kinda can't wait to read the next one.
Intrigue, adventure, travel, sexy times, betrayal, pretty clothes, Joscelin looking sad and pretty, second world analogues of old europe - this book has everything you'd wish. Loved reading it.
one of my favourites, keep finding myself re-reading old things rather than new things, but this is *so* worth it.
Story is 5 stars (I've read it many times and love it). For narration this version gets 4 stars. This is my first time listening to the audiobook and the narrator is ok, but her mispronunciation of several well known words, especially French origin ones, is really distracting...and the voice she uses when Phedre describes that she teared up or cried is annoying to the point of frustrating.
