My kid liked this book; I loved it! It was funny and witty. It dragged on a bit for my 8-year-old, who wanted a conclusion and no more mystery, but I found it thoroughly entertaining. It was fun for him and me to speculate the perp together, becuase neither of us could guess until right up towards the end!

This is personally one of my favorite books. I found that it taught me not to judge people by their stereotypes and labels. Although this book is talking about criminals and things like that, it was mixed in with a lot of humor and witty banter.

Although most people I know don't like Eoin Colfer's books, I find that they are very entertaining to read. I liked the Artemis Fowl series, but this is definitely my favorite Eoin Colfer book. This book was still as entertaining the second time I read it. One of my favorite books.

A branch away from Artemis Fowl, interesting idea, but not the same charm

Really liked the Noir atmosphere with grade school characters.

Reminisced of Bugsy Malone.

While initially disappointed at the tone of this book, mainly because I expected another Artemis Fowl, I eventually grew to enjoy it. It was Noir-ish enough to be funny and keep me interested but not so much that it became unbelievable this was a 12-year-old speaking. And the plot did tend to get a little ridiculous. I can’t really reveal HOW ridiculous without giving away some of the mysteries, but let’s just say I can’t really see this happening in our world. Anyway. Colfer has done a great job moving away from Fowl, and embracing another near-teen who doesn’t quite seem to fit in.

  • Strong character development? It's complicated

This is an extremely amusing Encyclopedia Brown-ish novel. I loved it. Colfer's use of cheesy detective humor had me laughing out loud as I read.

This follows the story of a child detective investigating the seemingly harmless crimes in his town. And it keeps ya guessing. I thought I had it figured out, but I was wrong. *le sigh*

You'll really enjoy this. One thing I really appreciate about Colfer is his use of strong children characters. This book had a young man who had become a licensed detective by taking an online class and using his father's birth certificate. Colfer obviously loves kids.

Great read!

Fletcher is no Artemis! But he's kinda adorable in a bumbling way.

SpoilerI was a bit shocked that Fletcher got beat up so bad! Even if it was an accident. Crazy.

The whole thing about Red's family being bad and no one trusts them kind of reminded me of the Avery's "Making A Murderer" thing. But I'm sure Colfer didn't have that in mind when he wrote this book.
