I wanted to like this, from the summary (man in his sixties who has shut himself away and avoided making friends decides he needs to learn how to live for more than just work and go find his first and only love whom he lost decades ago) it sounded like an LGTBQ version of "a man called Ove." However the characters were all a bit too Disney for my liking and it didn't have the depth that I was expecting.

I'm obsessed.
Albert is so damn charming and relatable. I've never read a story like this before and there's so much that I could relate to, but at the same time it was a completely new perspective that I enjoyed reading from. Despite how different I am from Nicole, I also found parts of myself in her story as well. I felt bittersweet, because her experience of asking for more from a romantic partner went much better than mine, but I enjoyed it all the same. Highly recommend if you want a book that will make you giggle, cry, and reflect on the relationships you have with those around you.

Unreadable. A wannabe Backman book. Classic case of telling instead of showing.

This would have been a 5 star read for me, but there were some elements that kept it from that top ranking.

First, there was some really unnecessary fatphobia. It added nothing to the story and really took me out of my immersion in the story because I was so frustrated with it. The beginning was also upsetting not knowing what I was getting into regarding the pet death and such.

Beyond that, I thought this was a lovely exploration of self from an oft underrepresented demographic in love stories (ESPECIALLY queer ones). The relationship between Albert and Nicole was absolutely my favorite part of this book.

I love the growth for our main character, Albert, and the way the growth is depicted. I also love the representation across the board, and the story’s overarching messages. I just didn’t love the writing. It’s not bad writing by any means, it’s just more telling than showing, in my opinion.

Delightfully charming.

If you love Letters to Juliet, would recommend!
