Soooo… this is pretty much as advertised, a feel-good story about a postman who’s always hidden most of himself away from others, but now that he‘s facing retirement, he decides to open up and embrace his real self. It’s predictable as that kind of book often is, and I don’t fault it for that - but it’s very clunkily written. It deals a lot with queer history in the UK, which is *great* but it also sounds like the characters are citing directly from a book or doing a presentation. The author also feels the need to explain everything to his readers, which isn’t something I am too fond of.
I really enjoyed the author‘s first book, but this could have done with some (or a lot of) refinement. I think the motive for writing the book is a great one; the book itself, not so much.

A heartwarming romantic fantasy about a 64-year-old postman, Albert, who finds himself confronting his past and the loneliness of his life after he is notified he must retire at 65. Set in a Lancashire town, the story sees him connect with his community as he belatedly comes out as gay and seeks to locate his first love, George, who left after a traumatic break-up.

Albert is a charming narrator and the book reminds us of all the angst that went with coming out as a young gay man even in recent history. I loved his voice, and the change he goes through during the process or becoming his true self. The supporting characters were well-drawn and I eagerly turned the pages to find out what was going to happen at the end.
My main problem with this book is that I didn't write it. I was absolutely enamored with the protagonist, Albert Entwistle, from the first word spoken until the last. This is a story about hope, courage, standing up for what is right (even if you're slow to do it), believing in yourself, believing in love, opening yourself to possibility, and learning to live life to the fullest. I laughed, cried, my heart soared, and I was filled with hope. Excellent job from Matt Cain! Also, the world needs more Georges.

Sweet and lovely coming-of-age story - except the coming-of-age is happening to a 64 year old gentleman! Pacing was a tad slow and the ending was predictable but the engaging story and characters made up for it.
