I received this ARC through my employer (at a bookstore).

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found myself constantly questioning the various characters and re-evaluating what I thought the end of the book was going to be, I was never correct. I will admit the very end shook me a bit, but I suppose that is what makes a great book. I will definitely be recommending this to others that are fans of psychological thrillers!

What a rollercoaster ride that was. This fast paced story had me at the edge of my seat and was mental gymnastics for me as I questioned everyone and everything. Gen’s perspective seemed so genuine, it was easy to slip myself alongside her as she tries to determine the truth of what happened to baby Beth. ⁣

I loved how McKenzie drops red herrings, not to purposely throw the reader off track, but because even they would be so believable. What is MDO? Is Hen telling the truth? Why is Charlotte calling Art so much? This whole read is a journey of sorting truth in lies in a really enjoyable way. At one point I was wondering if everyone was just involved in some sort of cryptic cult! ⁣

One thing that stung me badly was Tris’ portrayal. All of the characters at that point had been so fluid, well thought out, and surely written. Yet Tris…as brief as his appearance was, it just seemed a little forced and stereotypical. ⁣

I was able to guess two out of the major three plot twists, which, hey, happens to me a lot…but if you’re looking for a high stakes story of a mother that will do anything for their child, seriously, pick this up. It almost gave me Rosemary’s Baby vibes, but in the best way. ⁣

Never given the chance to hold or see her still born daughter 8 years ago, Geniver still has dreams of her. A stranger knocking at her door one day leads her to believe that her child is still alive and that her husband was involved in a cover up.

I did need some time to get into this story but then I felt it and this became a crazy ride. It’s full of lies, secrets and betrayal, so complex in emotions and this sense of paranoia throughout.

Multiple clues point towards the big reveals, so you just have to rush through this slowly building mystery but the author also does a great job, giving us several possibilities, all incredible and credible at the same time.

Gen lost her daughter at birth eight years ago and ever since she has been drifting. Until a stranger shows up at her door, telling her that her child is alive, somewhere, waiting to be found.
It’s insane, unbelievable. But why would anyone make that up? And why is her husband so reluctant? Who can she trust to help her?
Hope quickly turns into fear and paranoia, as she realizes that finding the answers might open the door to something even worse than not knowing…

From the very beginning I was suspicious but dang. The twists just kept coming and whenever I thought I had figured it out, things turned again and nothing made sense anymore, leaving me confused and absorbed in this story. I was really like “I feel you Gen, we can’t trust anyone.”
And it does turn out to be another kind of sick. I mean I love mysteries and have read quite some. But this ending? Mind blown!

We have a woman, clearly lost, a well respected business man, clearly adoring his wife, his presumptuous sister, her untrustworthy best friend, many people who clearly try to hide something and some who want to help but end up dead. And a child’s narrative that stays a mystery until the very end.
All of this makes a crazy good story and I’m going to watch out to more from this author.

About a third of the way in, I couldn't put this book down. I felt like I was becoming crazy paranoid right along with Gen (the main character). The ending was fantastic and the book went to places I REALLY didn't see coming.

Not my cup of tea. None the characters grabbed my interest enough to even root for them. Instead of a psychological thriller, this book turned out to be a drawing room drama...all talk little action. At first I felt sorry for the heroine Geniver even if I thought it was a dumb hybrid name for a character. After a whle I got tired of he whining and insecure personality. The direction the story would take was telegraphed early and he book as a whole did not live up to it's title or cover blurb.
Thanks for letting me read this ARC and sorry it was not something I am interested in reading.

I received "Close My Eyes" by Sophie McKenzie which is due to be released July 2013 from a friend who I introduced to Goodreads. She won it in one of the first-reads giveaways and doesn't currently have time to read it. She asked if I would like to read it first, and of course, I jumped at the opportunity. "Close My Eyes" is a psychological suspense novel, 390 pages long (which is a little on the long side for my tastes usually). I wasn't sure I wanted to go there after reading the front and back covers which are just covered in reviews from different places, but nothing telling me what the story was actually about. Now I was not looking for spoilers and the covers didn't provide any, but I do like a hint concerning what I am about to read.

I opened the book. I read chapter 1 and wasn't sure if I would make it through to the end. It just didn't grab me right away as a story I could really get in to, but some stories take a little time. I read chapter 2 which ended on page 32. I was hooked. I flew through the rest of "Close My Eyes." I was in the story. I was feeling Geniver's pain ... and confusion (not confusing for me but for her). Every time I turned a page, there was a twist that changed the story and yet it was remarkably easy to follow. The twists and turns just kept me guessing "who done it" and why. Every time you thought they found the right path, a divergent path would appear and take you in another direction or bring out another possibility.

I discovered why a short synopsis wasn't on either cover. There is no preparing you for what you will find between the beginning and end pages of this novel. It's definitely suspenseful and will mess with your mind while you follow Geniver on her path to finding the truth. It sucks you in and holds you there until you know the truth, but then that's the end. And the end....WOW! That's all I can say...WOW! To say anthing more might giveaway something, but that would ruin the book. You have to read it to find out. Don't miss "Close Your Eyes." It's definitely worth keeping your eyes open for.

Nice little mystery/suspense. I saw a few of the turns before they happened but some still had me on the edge of my seat. Creepy ending could be a good lead in to a follow up novel.

Wow - I haven't read a psychological thriller this good in a while. This book went so deep and kept me turning the pages. I couldn't figure out who did what, which I LOVE, and the plot kept changing with new twists and turns. I also love that the ending wasn't rushed, and she made time to explain exactly who, what, where, and why. Definitely recommending!
