I always enjoy this series. I like reading it sporadically though. This was as usual, very good. Looking forward to the next in the series.

Another wild ride!

Even when you think you know what's going on, there's always a twist! This book didn't quite go how I thought it would. I was expecting redemption for a character and it didn't quite end up the way I had hoped it was. Another great read!

It’s been two years since Joseph King was accused and convicted of murdering his wife, leaving their five children to be raised by their aunt and uncle. Now Joseph has escaped and Police Chief Kate Burkholder is certain that the Amish man will return to find his children. She’s got unique insight into the man as she grew up with him when she was Amish and he was her first crush. But, the man he grew into bears little resemblance to the boy she remembers.

This was an exciting though tragic story as Joseph strongly asserts his innocence, even after he ambushes Kate and holds her hostage. I’ve repeatedly lamented how Kate goes into situations without backup and gets into trouble. It happens again here but what is different this time is how she receives the scorn of her fellow members within law enforcement. It stung and felt realistic, including her reaction. Despite all this, Joseph’s denials have a ring of truth and Kate decides to do her own investigation of the murder and things got interesting and exciting.

The story deviated from the normal patterns I’ve experienced with the earlier books and I was all set to give this my highest rating until the final culmination of the investigation. Still, this was a great listening experience, one where I couldn’t put the book away. I continue to love everything about the narrator’s performance. Kate used her team effectively, using caution when needed and adeptly managing the politics. I think there’s hope for her yet! 4.5 stars

05/15/17 - Received this book in the mail today from the publisher. The giveaway I entered said it was for book #8 in the series, so I'm not sure if there was a mix-up. :)

09/07/17 -- I started reading this book today. I had entered a Goodreads giveaway for this book (in May 2017) and was one of the winners. However, after receiving the book, I discovered I actually was sent the next book in the series (#9 Down A Dark Road) instead. The letter that came with the book thanked me for entering the giveaway for book #8 but stated that "enclosed is a copy of" book #9. I'm not sure what happened with the giveaway, but I'm looking forward to reading all the books in this series!

09/26/2017 -- Finished this book on 09/13/2017.

This book hooked me from the very beginning. It moved at a fairly quick pace with a lot going on throughout out. As I read this before reading the earlier books in the series, I am sure there is some background of Kate that I am missing, but I felt like I wasn't lost by reading this one out of order. The murder was the very thing in the story and told in such a way that made me definitely wonder how it was going to be solved after the way it was presented. I am looking forward to reading more in this series!

***I received a copy of this book from a giveaway here on Goodreads in exchange for my honest review.***

I borrowed Down a Dark Road to read on a long weekend, without realizing that it was part of a series. While technically it can be read as a stand-alone, I feel like I would have been able to appreciate it more if I had read the other eight books in the series that preceded it.
I thought the plot was good and Castillo is definitely a great writer. However, for being the Chief of Police Kate Burkholder seems to make a lot of rookie mistakes. While the case/mystery in this book is clearly personal as the suspect was a childhood friend of Kate's, it just seemed to me that Kate was making mistakes that she shouldn't have. I did enjoy the flashbacks to Kate's childhood and her determination to find the truth about her childhood friend.
While I probably would have enjoyed it more if I had read the previous books in the series, I still thought Down a Dark Road was a good read. I will have to check out more of the series soon!
