★★★½.
This was a new plot for me in GFY but it worked well in my opinion. Detective Kurt O’Donnell was injured in an explosion that killed his work partner Ben. As a good partner, Kurt decided to extend himself to Ben's family but quickly realized that he didn't know anything about Ben's family. So Kurt went in search of Ben's family and this is when Kurt realized that Ben wasn't who he thought he was.
First of all, Kurt had no idea that Ben was gay nor did he know about the partner Davy. Second, when he got to know Davy and how Ben treated Davy, Kurt felt guilty and tried to help Davy pick up the pieces of his devastated life.

The mourning of Ben made Kurt and Davy get close and soon Kurt, who is straight, found himself having sexual fantasies about Davy. But Kurt couldn't act on them because he is catholic, plus the fact that he wasn't gay. Besides, after what Davy went through with Ben, a closeted detective was not something Davy wanted to experience again. Is being friends enough?

I liked Kurt and I especially liked how close his family was. I loved Kurt's new work partner and that relationship was obviously more valuable and way more supportive than what he had with Ben. I liked how compassionate Ben was overall, especially considering that he sent texts for over 6 months with no reply. I am ambivalent about Davey. I just didn't feel like I got a good sense of who he was. He was just really weak but that was understandable since his partner for 6 years was just murdered, who wouldn't be feeling so low? He obviously had friends and a real life before because they all popped back in once the barrier (Ben) wasn't in the picture. So I know he must have been a great guy before his self-esteem was smashed. Maybe we will see more of him in the next book.

I guess I’m now a sucker for slow burn angsty shit. This was absolutely marvelous and painful to read, especially when Davy ghosted Kurt.

I loved it, and hoped that the reunion would be under better circumstances

4.5/5 Minus half a star for having only Kurt's POV. Other than that it's perfect.

This was such a sweet slow burn story with a little bit of angst.

I liked the writing, the pace and Kurt's journey.

I felt the ending was a bit rushed, and i would have loved to get Davy's POV.

Overall it was a cute, easy-read.

A really good read that drew you in more as you read through it. I'd have liked to know a bit more after the epilogue - how their relationship developed more and reactions to it, also would have liked to read more of Kurt's story when the writing went in big leaps or poss some more of Davy in their months apart. However i think i'm just being greedy for more of a good thing! I started off not really 'getting' Davy's character but as the story unfolded you could undertand a bit more of why he was, though i still wavered between him being strong(in the relationship) but appearing 'soft' when dealing with others and not sure which i liked.
Read it twice before reviewing

An enjoyable but not totally memorable read. It was a slow-burn romance that totally fit the story-line best. Kurt finds out he never really knew his dead partner, Ben. He was a closet gay and Kurt discovers his own latent homosexuality when he is drawn to Davy, his dead partner's other half. Davy has been psychologically abused for the 10 years he was with Ben and Kurt has to prod and cajole him back to life. Kurt has feelings for Davy but Davy has no wish to become a cops hidden secret ever again.
The time-line is realistic and Davy's gradual reawakening well done.

The first reason I loved this book? It's set in my home town and I felt...comfortably familiar with the setting.

But more importantly, I loved this book because of the characters. They grabbed me on page one and didn't let go until the book concluded. I really liked that we, the readers, get to know Detective Kurt O'Donnell's slain partner Ben, and the hidden life he led, right along with Kurt. Kurt was a good guy and I really loved that once he found out Ben's life partner had, in fact, been a man he still dives in with both feet to do what he can for Davy. I enjoyed watching their initial contact slowly metamorphose into friendship and eventually, to straight Kurt's confusion, into something deeper.

2.5 stars. I had higher hopes for this one. The plot and premise were interesting. And being from near Toronto, I hoped to “spot” some of my favourite places in the city as I read. The execution was unfortunately pretty bumpy and uneven. The writing didn’t flow very well for me.

It took Kurt a while to come to acceptance. That seems like real life.

I was curious how Davy and Ben had gotten together.

I really enjoyed this. Definitely didn't expect Ian's confession though.
