Cop Out by K.C. Burn

3.5 - Interesting premise, interesting characters, and a more realistic approach to realizing you may be gay at the age of 31. K.C. did a great job with the road to discovery - it was not instant and not just a shrug of the shoulders and say 'huh, must be gay' and be okay with it. Both of the MCs had major head issues and it was good to see that they both realized they needed the time to figure it out. I needed more at the end, but all in all a good book.

Completely unrelated to the story, but who chooses these covers?? Makes it very awkward to read the book in public when I swear to God, it's a pretty innocent one. Like yeah, there's sex, but it's not erotica like the cover makes it seem!

Right, now that that's done with, on with my review:

I really enjoyed reading "Cop Out". Books like this usually come with double POV, if not more, so just one POV was surprising but it certainly worked. I liked all the characters, the writing and I found the story interesting and easy to follow. I also enjoyed how it was about more than just being gay, how it was about family and friendship, moving on, and it had a wonderful secondary cast as well.

My first K.C. Burn book and I loved it!
Finished it in one sitting! Couldn't put it down!
I adored Kurt and he totally understood the goodness of tsatziki sauce! :)
I wanted to hug and love on Davy. He suffered so much! And I totally agree with him with his distaste of mustard, lol.

Reading as part of BioB's Spring Cleaning week.
3.5
I should start off by saying this is one of my preferred tropes-GFY or, more accurately in this case, didn't realise I was gay all along.
The story takes place other quite an extended period of time and the time jumps weren't always obvious.Would have liked to see more of Davy in the third quarter of the book. The reunion was a touch too predictable and accepting on all sides for me. And I felt the moving in together was too rushed. Also while I understood why they were apart for such a large period of the book Davy's complete radio silence erked me, as did Kurt not getting in touch earlier.

And the reason for the brother's reaction was obvious.
All in all a solid and enjoyable read. I liked it but didn't love it.

Story of a cop who falls for his dead partner's lover. A story of grief, confusion, and coming out. Well done.

Another one of those gems deeply buried in my tbr until unearthed for a Goodreads challenge. I truly enjoyed this. Had some difficulty with Kurt at first but his struggle with his sexuality seemed real and fraught with confusion. Some of his words and thoughts were so stereotypical but when you think about his upbringing - an Irish Catholic family with 6 or 7 (lost count!) siblings - his thinking makes sense. Great writing. Realistic setting. Sort of wondered why the author went with the name Davy as one of the MCs. It's seems like a name for a child. Author explains it at one point, but for some reason that bothered me. Now that pivotal scene when things between Kurt and Davy boil over - yeah I think I read that 6 or 7 times. Emotion overload! Books starts off slowly but as you read, it makes sense. How do you reconcile the person you thought you knew with who he was. How do you make sense of how you're feeling if that does not fit with what you think are the norms. Surprised by the ending and will definitely read books 2 and 3.

Why oh why did I wait so long to read this book?! I REALLY REALLY REALLY LIKED IT!!!

It had such a different pace to most books out there, whether stories with a GFY theme or even cop romances. I also really enjoyed the very hard look it gave into what it can be to live in the closet not only for the person that chooses this but for the partner that goes along with it. It was kind of chilling to read about the traumatic effects living like your life in secret can have on a person.

Kurt O'Donnell wakes up in the hospital to realize he has been injured and his police partner Ben has been killed in the line of duty. Kurt is devastated and wrecked with guilt. He wants to reach out to Ben's family, but he does not know much about Ben's personal life, the man was secretive and never ever shared about anything beyond the job.

When Kurt goes to the memorial service he meets a man and a woman that were there for Ben's service. Was the woman Ben's wife? If she was, why did the man with her seem to be the one grieving? He needed to know...He began to suspect that he really did not know much at all about Ben.

So when Kurt comes to Ben's house he discovers that the man, Davy, was not only Ben's partner, they have been together for the last 10 years and by the looks of it Ben had forced Davy so deeply in the closet that he had stripped him completely of his own identity. Davy was lost and depressed and Kurt stepped in and helped him through his grieving.

Kurt began to visit Davy every day, they fell into a cautious friendship. Davy slowly began to come out of his shell, while Kurt realized just how unfair Ben had been to this man.

Little by little Kurt realizes that he has feelings for Davy, and he does not know how to deal with them, to this point in his life he had always thought he was straight. He knows that he can't be careless with Davy, he as already been through too much, but he can't throw himself into something completely new either. All these desires and urges are disconcerting and confusing. He has no idea where he stands and eventually he lets his feelings get away from him and an act of jealousy towards and unsuspecting Davy ruins their friendship.

What I liked about this book was that the pacing REALLY helped build the relationship, more than a year elapsed before Kurt and Davy decided to give things a try. I also loved that Kurt took his time to interiorize his feelings and make things right in his own life before he made amends with Davy. By the time they started their life together they were both healing and stronger and in the light, NO HIDING.

The more I think about this book, the more I like it. Kurt was such a likable guy, and so willing to do what he had to to be happy. Davy was so dear, and his change through the book just lovely. I was so certain that they had a bright future ahead by the end.

LOVED IT. REALLY REALLY DID!
