An interesting book about a different culture. It was difficult to put myself into Massoumeh shoes as the culture she lives in is so foreign to mine. She faces challenges in her life that I can't even imagine and perseveres. Some reviewers commented that they didn't like the end. I may find the end unsatisfying but I find it totally believable when you consider everything Massoumeh has experienced in her life. Definitely worth reading.

I wanted to like this book - but I found that (1) I didn't like the protagonist's voice. (2) Perhaps it was the translation but it just felt "wrong" - I can't explain it more than, it sounded like a Western character ... but she wasn't. (3) I found her to be very self-pitying and the last 50 pages just upset me. Characters I had liked I began to absolutely dislike. A book that should have had me completely immersed in a culture, ideology and historical events that have changed the world ... and instead I just kept reading it because I had started it.

Cartea asta nu merita doar 5 (* * * * *) stele. Si 10 ar fi putine. Minunata!

The initial problem with the book was that the praises put it on too much of a pedestal. However, I cannot ignore the way in which it explores feminism thrue a different lense.
