I discovered this book in a search for an informative popular science summary of how our bodies deal with sugars and starches and how to effectively manage a glucose curve through food. That is an aspect of this book, but its second mission, to sell a diet book and Instagram brand, overshadowed and dumbed down the 'sciency' bit.
My big gripe is that there is little nuance in how the author presents the science. For example, CL (carbohydrate last) eating is represented as an uncontested fact and she only references studies that support this view. I don't like arguments based on cherry-picking. I want more rigor and transparency and at least the intellectual honesty to acknowledge that there are competing studies which run counter to the CL claims, perhaps with some discussion of why the author finds these less persuasive. Instead, it is appeal-to-authority with name-dropping Ivy League institutions.
I'm still looking for a robust discussion of glucose effects on the body and management strategies for the lay reader.

I love the research and the simple steps to try that don’t make you feel like any food is off limits.

As much as I wanted to reject the girl boss, diet culture, pseudoscience vibe of this book, the recommendations really worked and I actually feel better after adopting the blood-sugar leveling strategies. Proof is in the pudding I guess!

I liked how there was plenty of information to back up the authors theory and she didn’t have to rely on a ton of anecdotal and personal stories. AND she wrote ways to reasonably apply and develop habits with this information in mind.
I’ve actually read a good amount of science nutrition books that focus on insulin - so I was expecting this to be refresher- but to my surprise- I learned some new things.
This book is really well organized and easy to understand. I like how concepts are broken into actionable life hacks. I’m going to research the authors claims a bit- and will drop this rating if it seems like some of them aren’t true.
The one in particular that I’ve never heard before is the importance of food order (fiber, fat, carbs).
I also liked the hack of looking for foods with a 5:1 carb to fiber ratio and will be using that from now on.
