I was very disappointed with this one. The story in the previous book felt better structured. Or maybe it just did a better job breathing life into these characters. This book focuses more on the mystical elements and for some reason I found it much less interesting the more I learned about them. I went from being very excited to read the rest of the series (I bought the rest of the series after finishing the first book) to being unlikely to continue.

Some character issues that irked me a little, but overall a really enjoyable book! Kept me thoroughly enthralled throughout and I'm excited to see how it concludes!

- that escalated quickly
- more worldbuilding
- enjoyed the ebb and flow of the POVs, mostly...
- highly dislike Adare for her part in the story, unfortunately. Slightly frustrated that a female character who is presented as one of the major POVs is so unlikable but hopefully she will be redeemed. Interesting and necessary character, though. The other strong female characters also more than make up for it.

Sequel continues the pace the first one set, this time raising the stakes and expanding the world building. It accomplishes what every sequel should strive for: to make you want to read the next one

While the first book dragged slightly and didn't mix characters a lot, this one changes things up immensely. Characters are whisked from one place to another where they collide with each other, all with shocking revelations that have huge implications for the world. So awesome and cannot wait for book 3.

Too dark for me, plus it felt like tons of time went into creating more depth for certain characters just to kill them off.

I was torn between 2.5 stars and 3, but because the plot is interesting, I rounded up. That being said...

This book is 717 pages long. It really only needed to be 260 pages though, as there were 52 chapters and only the last five of each were at all interesting. I wanted to set this book down a number of times but managed to slog through it because I was curious to see how things turned out. But after 717 pages, any caring about the characters has been beaten out of me. The story in this book gets messy and convoluted and everyone but Kaden sucks at making decisions. Too bad Kaden is boring AF. Since I'm not short on reading material, I doubt I'll be picking up the third book any time soon, especially if it is as long as this one was.

Writing a sequel is not easy. The story and the characters are already rolling, which makes it easier to start. But standing still is not an option, you have to improve.
"The Providence of Fire" improved, but at the same time, it's weaknesses became more apparent.
At least to me. The actions are still a bit too extreme, the descriptions too long, the prose lacks finesse. But it works. Simple, but effective.
I'm conviced Mr. Staveley knows little about animals and that's why the Kettral (giant birds of pray!!) are still being handled like super cool helicopters. spoiler:
SpoilerThat's also why you have killed off the only character who has shown empathy towards the birds, RIGHT? >.<

The Flea is still my favorite character, finally someone who knows how shit has to be done. I'm waiting for him to drop the trope line "Too old for this shit" sometime soon.

Looking forward to book 3.
