A little girl named Shiva and a tall monster named Teacher live together in the woods. Teacher lies to Shiva and tells her that her aunt will return soon, knowing that the aunt will never come. The nearby town fears Teacher and Shiva both, fearing a curse that affects outsiders--and anyone outside the town is an outsider. Is it a metaphor for cults? Xenophobia? I don't know, but Teacher is a scary-looking monster who is actually a sweet and selfless soul and that is the way to my heart. Can't wait to read more.

A simple yet effective story about a little girl and a cursed monster caring for her in a world divided by those inside the city walls and those living outside of them. It's a bleak landscape but filled with a quiet beauty brought to life by the author's minimalist and sketchy artwork. The atmosphere of the book is almost palpable as you read through it. This series seems to be off to a great start and I am excited to learn more about they mysteries that exist in the world. The relationship between the cursed monster and the girl is very adorable and clearly the two of them care greatly for each other. It makes for some very sweet moments, even though the monster isn't telling her everything about her situation.

This is a very cute and genuine story.. and kind of sad in some aspects. I'd love to read more to find out what happens with the young girl... She's precious!! The only things that bothered me slightly is that some artwork is difficult to distinguish with the page being flooded with pen work, and some of the dialogue bubbles are not correctly drawn, where it's not easy to figure out who is saying what, and the sounds are drawn like they are being said instead of just making sounds. That's why I took a star off, other than that though, seems like a very interesting story!
