If the Holocaust and walking dead had a baby, it would be this book.

This book is very, very dark; I cried through about half of it. Abel's story was the hardest for me. I enjoyed the book, it is well written and there are no dull moments. I think the love story fit the book and world it was written for well.

Not for me
dark emotional tense fast-paced

I like the book, but I didn’t like some stuff that happened. Dani/Wren was raped, and she decided to keep it, which in my opinion, it felt more like the author didn’t wanna put like abortion in her book. And I didn’t like that. It almost felt like the author is against abortion and she put her views in the book and I was not really into that. Also, like half of the book felt like a different story. It was not the same feeling like the first half of the book. So I did not enjoy that either. So I suppose you can say I did like half of the book.

I love this book but I felt robbed of a ending, it just felt cheap.
Like the characters just went through ALL this shit, wren losing her entire family, being brutally r worded, having to throw little boys body’s into fire, finding out her brother wasn’t safe and adopted but instead was killed, falling pregnant from the man r wording her, escaping but eating poisons berrys that damn nears kills her but definitely makes her lose the baby.

Now as wren 2.0 she meets a boy from the inside of the wall via a hole in the ground. She rescued this boy and stashed him away falls deeply in love with him, then her father sends to do a job for the Shaw boys without six who is the boy that loves her (who also has the alpha gene which makes him incredibly violent) well six followers her and the Shaw boys try’s to r word her and of course six is like fuck you and goes ballistic on them boys only for the soldiers to find him. They were separated for eight yess, six now goes by ryhes.

That’s just genuinely the gist of some of the book, so much god damn shit happens it would take me ages to explain and it’s 5am so anyways all that shit happens and more and the ending is just not fulfilling at all.

I wasn't expecting a dystopian book to be this dark, but the dark dystopian genre seems very fitting. I'm surprised this book and series aren't more hyped up considering the characters, world-building, plot and writing style was on point and flawless. Very gripping and suspenseful with raw and heart touching characters. Reminds me so much of HH and TC. Best thing I did, giving this a chance.

“When the world is at its darkest, somehow love still carries the light. Love is strength and weakness. A crutch and a sword. It can leave a person hollow and heal their wounds. It’s a friend to the stars, with pain as its shadow.” - Juniper Unraveling.

Papa says everyone has a story that deserves to be told. Most begin years ago, after the second bomb hit, unearthing a deadly contagion that divided the population into the pure, the infected, and the Ragers. Many recount the moment we rose up from the ashes and started anew.
Others tell of the day we built a wall to keep them out. For some, they’re nothing more than the vestiges left behind—a simple name carved into the knotty bark of a Juniper tree. My story begins with a boy. A mute, from the other side of the wall, known only as Six, who touched my heart in ways that words never could, and gave me the courage to face my darkest truth.

I loved this dark, dystopian book and cannot wait to continue on in the series! This is the second book I have read by Keri Lake, but I love the atmospheres, characters, tension, and stories she creates! This story takes place in a dystopian world where a sickness has killed off most the population and made them onto zombie-like killers. We follow two characters who live in this society and their journeys. I won’t say much more because there are some great twists! However, let it be noted that this is a graphic story, there are plenty of content warnings for this one because it doesn’t hold back. DM me if you would like to know these. As a bonus, Keri Lake also made a playlist for this book and it is SO good, I love when authors do that because I feel like it adds another element to the story! As I mentioned, I am eager to continue on in the series and see what happens next!

I’m such a huge Keri Lake fan and when I heard she was releasing a dystopian novel, I was ecstatic. Not only dystopian but dark too! It really makes you think about mankind and this was heartbreaking at times but oh so amazing!! I know A LOT went into this book!!

3.75/5
dark tense slow-paced

This author has a different writing feel that took me a bit to get into but when I did, I really enjoyed it. The setting is future Earth where a virus has turned people into zombie like creatures. One community is trying to find a cure and doing horrific things to do so. I loved the twist in the middle of the story with the two main female characters. I loved Wren. Six and Wren's story has me hooked and I'll be checking out the future books. .
