More thoughts later, but gosh I wanted to smack Young Werther by the end. You know the scene in Moonstruck where Nicolas Cage is wallowing in self pity and professing his love for Cher and she slaps him and says "Snap out of it"? Yeah, like that.

What about no?.
I liked the beginning, I was about to think it would be one of my favorite books, but no. It's way too much: Werther's feelings are exciting, but the story is wasted, to me. Every page means the same every time, I got bored.
I'll give it two stars because of the great description of the human as an anguished being, but that's all.

well I guessed by the title of this book that it was not going to be a happy read and what a good guess! It took me a few pages to get used to the writing style (in fact I had to do a restart as nothing sunk in the first attemp), once he met Charlotte I found the reading easier. For such a small book this crams a hell of lot in as described by shovelmonkey1 above. Predictable ending but glad I have read it.
Fascinating to read from a historical perspective, but from an enjoyment perspective it is tiresome. The romanticization of suicide alone would have angered me, but the surrounding nonsensical obsession with Charlotte was tedious to say the least. Again, very understandable why this would be interesting to a German in 1780, but I didn’t enjoy the narrative at all.
Currently in my life it is the perfect time to read this book. I learned a lot from it. I enjoyed it very much.
I'M DOING RESEARCH!
Well, not really but I'll say so for the sake of the review. I'm reading this to get a handle on how a young dramatic mind works -since mine doesn't- and to read the final scene.
As a book it pretty solid; pretty prose, romantic musings, and social commentary. As a classic, it's pretty underwhelming.

2.5 stars would exactly do it. I read this once on my own and two years after I had to read it for school. The first time I really liked this but the second it nearly killed me! Werther is really such a depressed person that one has the choice between becoming depressed too while reading or laughing about his exaggerated complaints.
Werthers relationship with nature and the description he gives of it are well done, a nice read.
