It was good. Switched it up a bit from the same old revenge story and back to Utred and his oaths. But I was left feeling a bit that this book is a filler to the next story. Time will tell.
I've been on this journey with Uhtred and Company for awhile and certainly enjoy Cornwell's fictionalized version of the formation of England. As we move toward the conclusion of the series, I'm grateful that we've gotten a chance to spend time in Uhtred's later years. I think Cornwell does a decent job ensuring realistic capabilities, and ensures that the same bumps and bruises the young warrior would have shrugged off, now hinder him appropriately, though the later chapters suggest some liberties in this area.
Guess Who's Back
It's always good to see Uther back in the thick of it. He's getting long in the tooth but can still hold a shield. I was a little worried about this one... It was tough and go there for a moment. Uther has list a step but it's still as sharp as ever. Hope to see as many more of these as possible.

My least favorite of the series by far. Feels like nothing new happens. But Uhtred is still the best book character out there.

Fantastic, such a great series! Can’t wait to read the latest one.
Uhtred goes south to help in the succession war between Aethelstan and Aethelhelm. The usual stuff happens. It's not bad, just exceedingly predictable. While the historical parts, and the notes at the end, are interesting, the series has pretty much run its course. Luckily, only one more left.

* This review is for the series * As far as I can tell I started reading this series in 2011. I read all the books that were out at that time, picked up others as they came out, and recently bought the final three. (And re-read the tenth book because I couldn’t recall where I stopped and didn’t remember the plot.) I’m still kind of surprised how much I enjoy these novels, and how much I like Uhtred. I suspect it’s because there’s a blend of politics, history, battles, and pictures of everyday life. And Cornwell writes female characters that feel accurate and real to me. I also like how at the end of the book he notes which parts were based on known facts and which were not.
I had to stop and look at a timeline to see where these books fell compared to Hild, which I just read. Well duh, Hild is about the Angles in the east of England and in Uhtred’s world the Angles and Saxons have been pushed more to the west side of the island. Both are fascinating looks at an obscure period in history. I’m satisfied that this series is finished.
Wonderful!
As always, I have enjoyed this tale immensely. I had to stop, twice, to read other books for my work, but that made this last longer than I am usually able to. I can’t wait for the next story of Uhtred!
