Another great 'read' (I listened on audio book from Audible) from the series!

Over a year later and I am finally almost done with this series! This was book 12! I have one more left!! Every book so far has been a solid 4 stars. The battle scenes are well done, the characters are pretty well written, but good lord these chapters are way too long. The pacing is also so slow… I think it’s definitely an instance where I love the show more but I am definitely going to read book 13.

3.5 Stars ✨

“There are times when knowledge comes from nothing, from a feeling, from a scent that cannot be smelled, from a fear that has no cause.”

Another solid read by Cornwell. This one, to me felt a little different. It had its highs and lows. A good bit felt repetitive, and seemed a lot was just a filler to get us to the final book. Don’t get me wrong, still exciting just not as amazing as some of the others in the series. I’m ok with it though, he could write a phone book at this point and I’d probably read it. Absolutely love his writing - obviously if I’ve made it this far. I can’t believe it’s almost over. The hangover is already beginning as I open up War Lord, the 13th and final book of this beloved series.

I love how Finan kept saying they shouldn't be there, like they were Clerks coming in on their day off. But Uhtred never backs down. Twelve books in, and you know he is going to uphold that oath.

Good to spend some time with Lord Uthred... 12 books down, ? to go.

4 stars because after a couple of years since reading the previous book in the series, it was like being reunited with an old friend, good old Uhtred. And so I enjoyed the listen even if I found the pace a bit uneven and some other irritations I won’t mention so as to avoid spoilers. So really only a 3, but 4 for the fun.

Following the same structure as previous books in the Saxon Chronicles series, this one works harder to bring the fear of battles to life. Cornwell's fantastic scene setting makes you believe that you're really feeling and smelling everything around you. Uhtred's character development really comes through in this book as you get a glimpse of his age and his fears. You learn how childhood traumas and battle experiences have shaped him into the legendry Uhtred, but nonetheless, he is still human. Is this the first time Uhtred realises Alfreds mission of uniting the kingdoms to become England is achievable? Or is it just the first time he let's the reader into that thought process. Now, onto the last in the series!
