Little Eve

Catriona Ward

3.8 AVERAGE

Creepy, atmospheric, and precise. Loved it!

My first book by this author was Sundial, which I completely ate up. I loved it and the author’s writing style, so I grabbed another of her books quickly after.

This one, like the other I had read, had me guessing throughout and packed the biggest twists at the very end. While I wasn’t flying through this as I much as I was Sundial, it was still a great read. It is haunting to think about how evil humans can be, the lengths that they will go— and how others will just turn a blind eye.

This is the second book I've read by this author, the first being The Last House on Needless Street, and I have to say... Catriona Ward is fast becoming an auto-buy author when I'm looking for something dark and chilling.

Little Eve is told in dual POVs, and features a cult storyline. Eve and Dinah live with their "family" on an isolated estate in a small town in Scotland. This story starts out with a young butcher discovering the bodies of the family laid out in a ritualistic pattern. Then the timeline jumps back and forth between the before and after of this terrible discovery. Readers get to know the family and it doesn't take too long to figure out that something very, very wrong is going on in that house.

I never really knew what was going on, until the very end. I will tell you that I stayed up until the early hours of the morning to finish. I was riveted to the page. Little Eve is a gripping, sinister tale, and the ending a dark surprise.

What an interesting cult thriller. I loved the descriptive and imaginative writing that really pulled you into this secluded gothic island. The torture that this group willingly suffered at the hands of their leader - “Uncle” - was horrific and dark. At first I wasn’t that impressed with the twist at the end but once they explained the extent of the planning, I was definitely on board. My only complaint is with the later story line from Dinah - I thought those parts weren’t as exciting or necessary as the rest of the story. Overall, I would definitely recommend

4.25, rounded down. holy shit. holy shit!

(2.5/5 rounded up) Given how mind-bending The House on Needless Street was, this was extremely middling. Set in atmospheric, haunting rural Scotland, this is a fairly straightforward story of a family cult. The titular Eve is one several young women under the thumb of "Uncle", who keeps them isolated and trapped with occult stories and rituals. Eve is determined to succeed Uncle as the next Adder, their sea-snake-like deity.

When the cult members are found dead in what looks like a ritualistic murder, with only one left alive and Eve missing, the hunt is on for this woman who they believe is fanatical and dangerous. While all of this sounds intriguing enough (though not particularly innovative), this novel plodded along. The plot moved at an absolutely glacial pace and the stakes just did not feel high enough. Overall, an extremely mediocre read.

3.5. Audiobook and library. Some inventive turns and atmospheric.

It was a short book but felt a liiiitle slow anyway. The last chapter felt a bit rushed imo. I don't fully understand those last few pages but I enjoyed most of this book.

The flashbacks/forwards were well done.
