Unafraid to say that I just don't think I got it.

“When it comes to consciousness itself, science falls curiously silent. There is nothing in physics, chemistry, biology, or any other science that can account for our having an interior world.”

“Let God leave us! Let us grow up. Let us walk forward on our own. Because we need the silence of the holy: we need the sacred and equally we need its maddening silence. And in the curious privacy and relief of that silence we can go out into the chaos and commit a thousand acts of minor and gleeful splendor all our own. If it’s our tragedy to be left by God, then let it also be our luck.”

Beautiful and dark and CONFUSING. In a good way, I think, but also, what just happened?

I really devoured this book! I can't say I understand it completely, and I am definitely left feeling somewhat unsettled, but the writing was just amazing and I couldn't pull myself away from the story. I want to go read everything by this author now!

Listened to this one on audiobook, and am having a hard time collecting on my thoughts on it. This is one of those books where you will probably have a completely different experience depending on whether you read or listen to it. I think this will be one I come back to in print in the future. Rating 3.5/5.

I won this as a Goodreads Giveaway.

I'm sorry I just couldn't get on with this book. It took me forever to get through and I am normally a very quick reader. The premise is promising at first and I was interested in where these voices were coming from. But things became so slow and muddled and repetitive that I really just wanted to be done and move on.

The book is two in one. One book is a thriller about a sociopath hunting down his wife and daughter. The sociopath has almost limitless power and ability. The wife is trapped. There is no way out (until the deus ex machina ending).

The other book is about a group of disparate individuals who come together after they hear voices when they're not supposed to. What are these voices saying? Why do they say it? Is it God???

Why these two books have been jammed in together, I never really discovered, but I may have missed it because I started skipping through the voices to get to the thriller bit. Neither particularly satisfied. The characters were paper dolls being moved around to suit the plot. As a reading experience, one star, with an additional star given to the competency of the writing.

What in the wild hell. I did not expect the voices turn of the Rubik’s cube here. I was expecting a thriller, without.... the rest.... I’m glad it was a quick read, I’ll say.

parts of this book are really thought provoking, but i think the author is trying to do too much with the text to make it affective in all the themes, which ultimately hurts the entire thing as a whole.
