Karl Marx's lesbian son (I said what I said) writes Gideon the Ninth fanfic but does it so much better. The worldbuilding and religions are astounding. And I love Marney so much.

For me this book lacked a bit in plot. It was not easy to follow the politics or all of the various names. The twist could be seen from miles off. However, it's beautifully written. The prose is nearly poetry. I also really enjoyed a book about queer women that wasn't specifically a love story. Besides Stone Buch Blues, I have never read a book with a stone butch main character. It's a refreshing perspective!

My highlights stop at about eighty percent of the way through, because the last fifth of this book is a softly whispered "what the fuck" invested with genuine, lustrous, confusing emotion.

As I saw this recommended for fans of Gideon the Ninth I was immediately sold. This is now the second book I’ve read where I have to fall in love with a tortured butch with a sword who’s loyally single-minded about the first girl they ever knew and ends up killed in a vague, fantastical and impermanent way because of her???? Justice for my poor heart and also for Marney and Gideon who were both so hot and ferocious despite their agony.
Anyway, this book was lustrous (pun obviously intended) and dazzling and gritty and so full of love and queerness and ferocity and rage. Wow. A treasure.
