Almost gave this 3 stars, but in the end decided to give it 4. Here's why:
- Strong female protagonist (yeah, okay, she's kinda annoying in her self-assurance, but it is also her downfall, and what ruins her in the end)
- I liked it. Despite the book's flaws (not focusing enough on the death of her father, the man who Vivian eventually winds up with, Gabriel, or even the difficult choices that Vivian has to make and then face), I enjoyed it. The description and imagery was beautiful
- In some reviews, people complained about how this book is a "hate crime" because Viv winds up with someone in her pack rather than a human, because humans and weres cannot be together. How ridiculous. It's simply the way that she wrote the story, and I found it beautiful that Vivian eventually found what she was looking for in Gabriel. I think that this sort of thing happens to us ALL THE TIME as humans—take a small example of a girl hating her mother as a teenager, then realizing how wonderful her mother is as she grows older.

Anyway, this isn't exactly a perfect review, but I wanted to explain why this book deserves more than 3 stars despite its obvious flaws. If you like paranormal romance, give this one a shot!

I really didn’t want to like this book. Unfortunately, I do.

HOWEVER, I don’t really grasp what the message was here…it kind of seemed very “stick with your own kind”? Maybe “embrace who you are”? I’m not sure.

Very Twilight-esque and not just because of the whole werewolf thing. Just is very “sleepy town, mysterious killings, star-crossed lovers.”
Except instead of having the main character end up with someone who’s like…technically her age, she ends up with someone who is an actual, full-fledged adult. As a 25 year old, I couldn’t imagine being with someone still in HIGH SCHOOL
.

Basically, kind of problematic, doesn’t hold up, very much a guilty pleasure sort of novel. Better written than Twilight but still with all the questionable shit you love!

the canon romanticized ending of a seventeen year old dating a twenty four year  old who was previously dating her mom ..... wow truly a relic of its time

I'm giving it 5 stars because I'm completely biased. This book has been my comfort read since I was 12. However reading it as an adult I cringe real real hard at the age gap between Vivian and Gabriel. 16 year olds should NOT EVER date and hook up with 23 year olds. Werewolves or not lol. Low key toxic. Low key still a fun read.

Every so often a book comes along that I like well enough to read from beginning to end without stopping. Rarer is the book I bother to reread. There is only one book that I have read cover to cover without stop only to turn around and read it again making it so that I literally read it twice in a single sitting.

This book isn’t some great literary read, but it took me by surprise. It is part fantasy, part coming of age, and part romance with a twist.

Part of the surprise for me about this book was that I initially almost didn’t like Vivian, the book’s main character, but she becomes compelling and the story drew me in with moments of grief, violence, humor, fear, and human (werewolf?) connection. If you are remotely interested in paranormal fantasy, young adult stories, or romance then I would highly suggest you pick this up and give it a try.

As a side note, my review of the movie isn't quite so glowing. If you're interested, you can read it here: http://kates-couch.livejournal.com/21798.html

Back when my days revolved around Livejournal, my friends on there were consumed by this book, just as they were with the movie version of Rent. And like them, I jumped in the bandwagon. (Rent was fantastic, btw.)

Blood and Chocolate, at the time, seemed good. My friends were Harry Potter fans like myself and so the whole werewolf theme agreed with us. But even then, I couldn't say the book was GREAT. It was okay, and I liked it.

I reread it again today and decided that nothing has really changed. It's still an entertaining book, and often made me reminisce what my fifteen-year-old self enjoyed back then. At least this book is slightly better than Twilight.
