CAWPIRE — 5.7 / 10
Sunkissed follows Avery and her family as they spend two months in a remote family camp with no cell service or internet. This works amazingly for Avery since she wants to distance herself from her best friend, who kissed her ex-boyfriend. Messy, right? So Avery takes the Summer to escape relationship drama and live new experiences, like meeting Brooks, the cute guitar player working at the camp.
Although I hate keeping my book reviews short, there isn’t much that I feel like talking about regarding this story. It was okay, and that's the worst for me. It didn’t leave me excited, or curious, or attached to the characters. It’s your typical summer camp experience, with new friends, a blooming romance, and some Dirty Dancing vibes. There’s nothing terrible about this story, but there’s also nothing good or excellent; it’s too generic.
Two things I did enjoy, though. I’m a sucker for sibling relationships, so I enjoyed Avery's development with her sister and their journey to understand each other and value their differences. It would be even better if the relationship with the parents was explored more, but it’s not the point of the book. Second, this story is so easy to picture in your head because it’s so much like Summer teen movies. It could premiere on Netflix tomorrow, and I would watch it.
Sunkissed is your typical teenage story filled with drama, romance, overcoming fears and anxieties, and even finding a new talent and joining a music festival. If you’re a fan of teen Summer movies, Sunkissed is a book for you.

I love this story. I relate to Avery a lot. When she deals with her anxiety, being a people pleaser, and feeling like you have to be what people expect. There were moments were I cheered for Avery, moments when I teared up because I understood her and hearing what her parents said to her.. it just all hit home. I also want to go to a summer camp.

A family trip with *cue gasps* no wifi!! I loved this because this accidentally happened to me on a family vacation about 3 years ago! Except that I did not have an annoying sister and a cute off-limits staff member :(
Avery was pretty relieved about the no wifi thing since she was trying really hard to ignore her best friend who had recently kissed Avery’s ex-boyfriend. Also, Avery is tired of being the predictable daughter and wants to start trying out new things and coming out of her shell.
I loved the general plot and most of the characters (although Lauren reaaaaally made me mad towards the end). My only complaint is that it ended up focusing too much on the contest itself and not so much on Avery dealing with her issues. I feel like it would have been cute for Avery to have had bonding moments with her dad.

At this point, anything Kasie West writes, you know I’ll give it five stars. Heck, I take a week out of my summer to just REread all of her books that I currently own.
I didn’t even know this book was coming out until a couple months ago, and I don’t know how it managed to escape me because I keep track of her new books religiously.
But this one certainly did not disappoint. With an amazing female lead voice, and a sarcastic dark haired love interest, I couldn’t not love it.
A lot of Kasie West’s books center around the main character overcoming something that scares them, and for this one it was stage fright.
Even though I did finish this one in under 24 hours, I really love the journey that Avery goes on. The way her life crumbles and she’s watching everything around her fall apart, but manages to stick up for herself and put it all back together.
Somehow Kasie West just manages to be really good at making deep subjects lighthearted and fun, like how maybe you don’t want to go on the path that everyone in your life has planned for you and stepping out of your very tight comfort zone.
This book was great, and I manages to always see a little bit of myself in all of the characters shes crafted and I cannot recommend this book enough.
I can’t wait to see what Kasie West has in store next, and I’ll be first in line.
