I’ve tried to write this review many times. Instead of writing a long, detailed review, I’m going to keep this super simple. Maybe I’ll post the long version another time.
Ultimately, I struggled with this book. It’s not what I expected. But in the end, I appreciate this piece of art and glad it’s out in the world. I have no idea why it’s marketed as YA. That was a huge mistake. Much can be learned from this collection of memoir-ish poetry about life as an American Indian. I was especially interested in learning more about horrors of the Indian residential schools the author’s grandparents were forced to attend.

As a book written in prose, please be mindful of taking your time with the text. It is not a book that you should breeze through.
Graphic: Child abuse, Racial slurs, Racism, Xenophobia, Fire/Fire injury, Cultural appropriation, Abandonment, Colonisation, and Classism
Moderate: Addiction, Alcoholism, Death, Drug use, Forced institutionalization, and Grief
Minor: Homophobia and Death of parent
A huge warning for intergenerational trauma and discussion about residential schools.
