4 stars//Physical Book//I had really high expectations for this book, because I typically really enjoy books centered around politics. The concept of this one had me really intrigued and I've had it on my TBR for years now. Sadly, I don't feel that it fully lived up to my expectations. While the concept of this series is really fun and entertaining (it's centered around the idea of, "what if America was a monarchy instead of a democracy?") it just could have had more going on with the political aspect of things. I realize that it's a YA novel, but that doesn't mean there couldn't have been more development there.
I also found a good amount of the characters to be kind of annoying, if not downright unlikeable. We follow four main female characters throughout the series: Beatrice (who I mostly love but did sometimes find frustrating, which I realize was probably the point,) Samantha (who annoyed me through much of the book but redeemed herself by the end,) Nina (who I adored 100% through the entire book) and Daphne (who damn near almost ruined this for me, I disliked her that much.)
As for the side characters - I found them to have almost no development (Ethan, Adelaide) or for their personalities to be frustrating or lackluster (Jeff, the king - I can't even remember his name if that tells you anything) -- but Conner definitely was/is my favorite side character throughout the entire book.
Overall, I think this was fun, lighthearted fiction that kept me engaged, but I'm just a bit disappointed that the actual political side of things wasn't more developed. Hopefully this will change as the series goes on.

This book was recommended to me with the caveat "it's a YA book, but I think you'll find it fun" and boy did I!
Imagine that instead of becoming President of the United States George Washington became King of America instead and now his descendants still sit on the American Throne, it's a fun alternative history idea and a world I really enjoyed reading about. Yes it's YA, no it's not the next great American novel but damn I had fun!

Book started out fine but plot was not advancing and I lost interest in what was happening.
