The Crown Conspiracy started out interesting enough. I enjoyed the two thieves and how they pulled a fast one. The beginning made me think it was going to revolve around the two thieves and their relationship. I thought it was going to be a buddy, adventure. Sadly, it wasn't.

It kinda was but that was the problem. It started off that way but then got way political and tried to be a mystery. I think it failed in these respects because it was easy to figure out who was behind it all and the politics wasn't done well enough for me to care. It seemed to be all over the place.

Aside from the thieves, I also didn't care for the characters. I think it's because they didn't get enough screen time or things went by too fast. I liked the monk but he was more of an info dump with his pages of stories.

There were a lot of little things that might get me to read the next book: the wizard, the mystery of the church, the non-humans in the world, I just wish all of that wasn't brushed upon here. It either seemed to incomplete or tacked on to make it a series.

If The Crown Conspiracy was focused, I think it'd be a really good book. I'm curious to see if the problems I had with it are fixed in the next book so I may pick it up.

Listen to the graphic audiobook, it was a great way to consume this story.

I'm the most surprised I adored it. Maybe... afterall... I found a fantasy series that is political and has a middle ages-like setting AND I love it. I'm still as surprised as was when writing the 1st sentence.

I'd like to give this one 4.5 stars just 'cause I want to be able to give more in case it gets better.

What a fabulous opening book of a series. It had everything I enjoy. Fast moving and intriguing plot. Smart writing. Fun characters who you cheer for. Dialog that is witty and engaging. Plus, the plot had an ending in the first book but left threads along the way setting up the next book. Highly recommended.

This was really more an adventure book than a fantasy book. We've got two wrongly accused and highly skilled thieves, who are unwittingly wrapped up in a conspiracy, and who have these nasty consciences that seem to get them into trouble. It's not a new concept. But the book is a lot of fun nonetheless. It starts with a thieving job, goes directly into another job, a murder, and then the two main characters are suddenly mixed up in a royal conspiracy. This book is certainly not boring, as it is full of scene after scene after scene of action.

I might have liked this book better if it were longer, allowing the characters to be more fully developed in the midst of the action, and perhaps spending more time on the relationship between one of thieves and his girlfriend. The girlfriend was an interesting lady, of whom I did not see nearly enough. And I think I feel a little cheated at having experienced such a wonderful adventure without nearly enough romance. The story seems less fantastical without love having been an issue at all. In some ways, The Crown Conspiracy feels like a movie-adaptation of a book--abbreviated. All the good action remains, but I missed out on the character development and side stories.

Although this book is the first in a series of six, it stands alone. I am no hurry to read the second book, but I will definitely get around to it eventually.
