April Book Club Read

I didn’t know when I started reading this book that it was a Christian book. Its been on my shelf for a very long time. Luckily I picked it out to finally read. I won’t give a summary but just share my feelings about this one. I fell in love with Miss Ella. You really get a sense of how strong and loving she was. The story is told mostly in flashbacks which I sometimes can find confusing. But not the way this author wrote it. It was easy to follow and imagine for me. My heart broke for the 2 brothers and all they went through. Even poor Miss Ella wasn’t spared from the hands of an abuser. Yet Hearing how her Faith gave her strength was uplifting and sometimes her comments were comical (in a good way)! I’d sometimes find myself giggling. The ending was happy and showed the healing power of forgiveness.

Excellent book, not to girly.

This is not a book I would normally pick up. I like to read more light and fun books. Life it too heavy to spend my fun time dwelling on unpleasant subjects. That being said I really enjoyed this book. Parts of the book make you laugh out loud and others make you cry. The characters are well developed and real. The book is crafted in such a way that I quickly got lost in the story and was deeply moved by all the emotion the book possessed. The book's messages of love, forgiveness, and healing are truly touching.

I enjoyed this book more than a lot of the books I have read lately. Yes, it dealt with abuse, addiction and mental illness but there was also forgiveness, acceptance and the power of love.
I had not read any books by this author before. I will be reading more of his books.

If my memory serves me correctly, I think last time I wrote about Charles Martin, I said he was my favorite new writer. This is the fourth book of his I have read, and I surprisingly wasn’t quite as wild about this one. First of all, even though I am a Christian, I don’t like books that hit you over the head with it and come across as preachy. This one wasn’t completely that, but it was more overt than his other books. What I appreciated in his other books is how he so eloquently got the message across through his themes. I did like the characters, and thank goodness the boys had Miss Ella in their lives. Tucker shows great growth from the person he was from all he endured and witnessed as a youth growing up with an abusive, alcoholic and neglectful father. I think what didn’t quite work so well for me this time was the back and forth between past and present. It just didn’t quite flow as well for me, although he does write beautifully. I would still recommend the book. It just wasn’t my favorite.

Not one of my favorite Charles Martin books, the others I've read were less predictable and seemed better written. Still I will admit it was affecting! I teared up more than once.

Charles Martin is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. Wrapped in Rain was as good as Chasing Fireflies, or any of his other titles. Miss Ella on her knees in prayer is a powerful image and that idea of faith drives this novel and Martin’s writing. Martin’s writing is not hurried, but takes you along for a ride as he weaves characters and events together at his leisure. Always leaving you with questions that will eventually get answered. In a world where authors seem to develop their characters and story line for 300+ pages and then seem to tie every aspect up in the last 30 to 50 pages so as not to make their book too long for readers, Martin takes his time. Nice!!!

I love everything this man writes.
Such vivid descriptions and wonderful characters.
