I was very “whelmed” reading it. There were times of witty dialogue that I thought I’d start enjoying it more and then it would fall flat for chapters on end. The chemistry between the two main characters lacked a bit too. It would’ve been a 2.5 but the 3-4 spicy scenes took it up a slight notch lol.

3.5 rounded up. I struggled to get into this book but I don't think it was the books fault. I was coming off the heals of The Mistress and it was going to be near impossible to compete. Once I got into it, I loved the characters and set up of the romance. Ralston was so confident and sexy! Definitely my favorite part of the book. I loved Nick and can't wait to read his book!

This book got me out of the book slump!!! I enjoyed every second of it. It was entertaining, fun, sexy, full of swoon-worthy moments and led by two great main characters. Ralston was exquisite!

I loved how the author gives them so many interactions and different ways of getting to know one other. The plot is always moving and with every page I fell more and more in love with Ralston, and I found Callie funnier and freer.

I’m so happy this was my first foray into the realm of historic romance. I’ve always been apprehensive about this genre, worried it would be boring, slow paced, too uptight and hard to relate to. And what do you know, this book proved to me it can be the exact opposite!
I’ll definitely continue reading this series.,

It was a bit of a roller coaster, but nothing new here. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, I guess?

Lady Calpulnia Hartwell has followed all the rules of society for many miserable seasons, leaving her with a pristine reputation but no husband, and an almost crippling level of boredom. This year, she is determined to do things a little differently. But to satisfy her thirst for adventure, she'll need an accomplice. And who better than Gabriel St. John, Marquess of Ralston and infamous rake? Ralston needs someone to guide his tempestuous Italian half-sister through the social season and in return he promises to assist Callie in her quest. But in forgetting the rule book, Callie and Ralston are in danger of forgetting the one rule they've promised to keep: they cannot fall in love.

Callie and Ralston are famous in romancelandia and after reading Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake I am enthusiastically joining their fan club as well. Their friends-to-lovers chemistry is delicious and their escapades are so much fun--sneaking around adds tension and drama to their interactions. I also loved seeing their relationships with their siblings. Add in some of the very best slowly unfolding spiciness (and spicy is an understatement) and you too will see why this is definitely going to become one of my all time favorite historicals. I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

I liked both protagonists. I liked their siblings.

Don’t let the title fool you—this book is full of FEELINGS, well-written characters, and a fully formed heroine. I don’t why these romance authors keep surprising me. I really liked this! My heart ached for Callie, and while I wanted to throttle Ralston half the time, he was a lovable idiot.

3.5

Adorbs. AND she completed everything on her list, which is immensely satisfying. Sarah MacLean never does a heroine dirty. Juliana is my actual fave though. I am seriously so ready for her book and I just started this trilogy yesterday. Thank you, 2nd and Charles, for being the bookstore of my dreams and bringing this debut gem into my open, waiting, and willing arms.

This is probably my 5th re-read. It is still my favorite Sarah MacLean book. The other two in the series, I only have read once each. I wish Sarah wrote like this still. She seems to be on a path to be different and to be edgy with her stories and plots, but she shines so well here in the more traditional historical romance story.

I do wish she’d done a novel for Benedict.

In this book, Calpernica is the main focus. She is plump, a spinster and honestly quite boring, though likeable. As I get older, I kind of hate that she had to almost completely change herself to be noticed. I’d love a book where a heroine does little adventures, but remains kind of timid and shy. Like maybe the adventures are something she does for herself. IDK.

Anyway, happy to have completed this re-read.
